Topic: Insuffecient Memory Error

I have a workstation that keeps getting an Insufficient Memory Error.  Can you guys help?

Specs:
Windows XP 64 bit
3 Ghz Intel cpu
6 GB Ram
80 GB Primary HD over 50% free space
250 GB Secondary HD split into 2 partitions
AutoCad 2006
256 MB Video Card (NVidia I think)


We open one dwg that is 8MB.  Then open another that is 522 KB with 79 External References.  When we try to open any other we get and Insufficient Memory Error.

Any thoughts?

Quick note:

Only 29 process running in task manager.
Autocad lists as using 1.5 GB - when minimized it drops down to 7000kb.  When remaximized it only lists at 200,000mb.

Under OPTIONS in Vanilla '04 I have this, but your mileage may vary on account of you having ADT 06', I believe it's similar though...

My initial guess would be it's that file with 79 xrefs.

Yea, even though the file says 522kb, the file size of the xref's is not counted.  All that tallied up could make something pretty big, and depending on what is in those xref's, your computer could be having to work hard to display it all.  I'd check there first, after trying Deeg's suggestion to tame Autocad's behavior.

Why 6 gigs anyways??  I thought Win-doh's!! couldn't handle more than 3 or 4??!?

It's 64bit....can use up to 8 gigs (if I understand correctly)

@ deeg - I still don't understand what it is I need to be looking for.  As a side note we don't do any 3D stuff, all2D.

@ Matt - I hear you but these files open on other machines with less hardware all around so I don't think that is it.

@ RON - Yes XP64 can "see/use/allocate" more than 4GB as in XP32; however the motherboard can only hold 8GB.

We are running the PAE with windows XP 32 bit

We have 4 GIGs of ram.

PAE stands for the Physical Address Extension. 

We were going to run WIndows 64 but found out all the smaller programs we run is not compatible with windows xp 64.

While running under thePAE settings I can not take screen shots and paste into paint.  I get an out of error message.

Thanks for the links SDETERS.  I looked over them but didn't see how they could help.

This is a new problem.  We have been running this machine for well over a year now and just within the last few weeks have been having problems.

Memory does go bad.  I do not know how one would check that but it might be worth a shot.

My memory is getting bad. I can't remember how to check but I hear that happens as you get older.
