Memory does go bad.  I do not know how one would check that but it might be worth a shot. 

I agree with SDETERS, especially since you stated that the machine has worked well for over
a year and just started giving you problems...

If the computer is a newer Dell, I believe you can boot into a utility partition (F12) that will check memory\hard drive etc....

Then take a look at this utility to check the RAM http://www.memtest.org/
