I'm ready to go back to 2005
« on: March 13, 2006, 02:39:55 PM »
I can NOT believe how SLOW 2006 Map is.  I click on any text object and can sit there and count to 7 or 8 real slow before anything happens.  I've got a decent machine with dual processors, groups of ram and everything else.  I've heard mention of video cards but, nothing firm yet.  Working in Model Space seems to be faster than working thru a viewport but, there's tiemes when you just gotta work on a title block or something in Paper Space.

I need TWEAKS!! Lots of them.. Kinda hard to justify a subscription to a program that's gonna just slow me down....

My system at home is in the same way.. and it's a brand spanky new computer!!

Oh yeah, and when I'm in the print dialog bot and preview my print, then go back to the plot dialog box, that takes forever too..

I wonder if it's cause they made the whole thing look like it's an Apple program now??

set MTEXTED to "oldeditor"

I have one pc3 that I have to use for external plots semi-regularly that does this to me, the rest of the plot configurations that I use work fine.  Not sure what causes it, sorry.

Thanks for the reply Bob but, this is on regular old DText.  If anything, when it's MText, it appears to be faster.. I'm not exaggerating here either.. I clicked on a piece of text and hit reply on this message and got to the word DText before it came up for editing.  I've got a call into my local reps but, I think they're afraid to call me back. hehe..

Time to bring out the big guns I guess..

You can also set the old dtext editor by setting DTEXTED to 1.

Switching the Dtext editor to 1 took the time from 8 seconds down to 3 or 4.. A great improvement but, the same drawing in 2005 is almost instantaneous.. and switching to the old editor is defeating the purpose of upgrading..

Is anyone else having this problem at all??

Is this slowdown manifest in ALL drawings, irrespective of size, originator, fontUsage, distance from dwg origin, workstation, etc, etc ?

The rookie in our shop is having the same issue with Civil 3D 2006 but I am having no problems with a nearly identical work station.  I haven't had the free time to check it out fully yet, but I intend to look in the object selection settings first.  I have never liked the defaults anyway and now there is some new eye candy with visual effect settings that may be most of your problem.  I turned off both highlighting and dash although just the dash seems to be OK.  You can also turn off the highlighting for some object types which can be helpful especially deselecting hatches and xrefs.

Does Civil have Communication Center? I've been having the odd problem w/ it and have just turned it off. Perhaps looking on line is slowing your machine down

If you're running the 'default' skin for map it's a pig...super duper slow.

Type 'MapSkinMap' and it will toggle back to the old favourite look and feel map...that should speed you up.

cheers,
Glenn.

Yes, Civil 3D has the Command Center and it is definitely a pain in the keester.  Especially so be cause it doesn't realy go away even when you tell it to.  It pops back for no apparent reason after a few weeks off demanding new setup instructions.

Here is a  way of turning it off in the registry. I have only just tried it last night so perhaps it will come back too.
The WSCommCntr1.exe associated with it can cause vba to go nuts, so I'm hoping it will stay off.

PDJ,

You may check this also (freeze is one result, but slow down the other):

I find that if I set it to check "On Demand" and disable the balloon notifications, it stays that way.

I disabled it early on.  When I first set up Autocad 2006, I let it check for content, and it took a LONG TIME.  So I tried cancelling it, then all kinds of bad things happened.  I don't think it cares for Firefox much.

I've since discovered that it works if I just let it go, although it takes a long time.  I had it on for some time with Autocad 2004, and never found much use for the thing, though, so now I just keep it turned off all the time.

Kerry:  It doesn't matter what drawing I'm on, the slowness is always there. I've noticed a lot of regenerating (if you can call it that) of things like my layout tabs when this is happening.  I know when I have one drawing open and open another drawing, it'll go to the second drawing, then show the first drawing again, then finish going to the 2nd drawing.  That's something odd I've never seen before.

All:  This is only Map3d, not Civil3d.  Basically I'm not using any of the map functions but, since I use an external database with all of my maps, we have to have the Map3d functionality.

Jurg:  The program works, not freezing or slowing down on startup.  This is happening all the time I'm using it.  I've noticed a considerable amount of speed loss in just picking an item or selecting it during the execution of a command.  That I can live with a little bit but, this waiting 8 seconds to edit text is insane.

The highlighting options I described are typical for all 2006 products.  You may also want to look at the layout regeneration options under the system tab in options.  One of those may work better for you.
