That error is typically from a font file that is missing or a font that has been changed in the drawing. If a font references a specific item in a shx file (the number of the undefined shape) and it is not available of "defined" in the font file, the error is generated.

could that problem also be caused by a custom linetype definition file that has not been created properly?

we have that problem a lot and its only now i've realised that our acadiso.lin is loading but it is reporting errors.

any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

try getting the arch to 'pack' the drawing and re-send it to you, this will include and shape files or custom LT definitions
I thought i seen the light at the end of the tunnel. But it was just someone with a torch bringing me more work.

unless you find the offending linetype or shape and delete all the instances of it in the drawing and re-save/purge?
