Hi All
I just ran into the empty zone for trying to find how to open a .map file with Civil 3D.
I have probed Google and C3D with alot of import file formats and can't seem to locate
where/how to do this. If someone would be so kind to show me how to accomplish this task
it would be most appreciated. The data is listed as LiDar and Contours, if that helps.

Thanks

you will be importing this LIDAR data using the Create Point Cloud Object Wizard inteface

you may need to rename the extension on that file to one of the file types supported...
LAS
ASCII
GeoTIFF
etc...

where did this .MAP file come from, so that I might discover the file format and advise as to correct file type to select in Point Cloud  Wizard...

I had data the other day that needed to have a 'save as' done to it to be usable (to clear the x,y,z inforation from line one of the file)

Hi Mike
I found out since I got the files that the city of Farmington has a local system that they are going
to have to do a conversion for me. So, I have to wait and see what I get back from them on Monday.
They gave me a conversion, but it didn't work. Will get back when I have more info to share. State was NM

I think by this you are talking about Coordinate System, not a custom application that wrote the .map file.

I'd like to see the data when you get the next version of it so that I may advise correctly.

I'm sorry, but I got another file from them and it was a Coordinate System problem they have with that file. I still
have a file from them that I can't open because of the file format (.map). That was my bad, I'll want to stay on
track with the ? at hand.

you should be able to run C3D as administrator, and their coordinate system shouldn't be a problem...

.map file...I would like to see that baby...

You will receive a email when is is down uploading says about 8hrs as it is 1.4Gig.
The download will be very fast. I found this service a while back and subscribed as it works
very reliably without dieing during the upload. The upload is slow, though.

we are back to one of my original questions....

What is producing this .MAP file and what data (format) is the data?

OK, I'm starting to think....you might be able to open this mysterious .map file with Global Mapper...Export Lidar LAS Command
The Export Lidar LAS command allows the user to export any loaded elevation grid data sets to Lidar LAS format files.

When selected, the command displays the Lidar LAS Export Options dialog which allows the user to setup the export. The dialog consists of a General options panel which allows the user to set up the grid spacing and vertical units, a Gridding panel, and an Export Bounds panel which allows the user to set up the portion of the loaded data they wish to export.

and then export it to a KNOWN format (x,y,z, or other LiDAR point cloud compatible format) and then C3D can work with it.....

it looks like the data may have originated here : http://www.manifold.net/index.shtml

see above...

and if true, their application does support export to formats that are usable with C3D.... http://www.manifold.net/info/formats.shtml
