Reference manager states I can change the x-ref path to relative. I cannot find out how to do this no matter how much reading I do. I am using 2004..........would really appreciate any assistance.....

This is what I have. I have never used this so I'm not much help.

To change saved reference paths

In the tree view, click a drawing or a reference.
In the Reference list, select one or more references whose saved paths you want to change. You can use CTRL-click or SHIFT-click to make multiple selections in the Reference list.
On the Edit menu, click Edit Selected Paths.
In the Edit Selected Paths dialog box, in New Saved Path, enter the new path name. You can click Browse for Folder to locate a folder.
Click OK.
For the selected references, all path names are changed to the path that you entered in New Saved Path.

what I did was open the Xref Manager, and type in the relative path I wanted in the Xref Found box.  Then hit save path

I have tried typing in the path...no luck. I have selected the path through the browser and deleted the path.....no luck. The help section states that if you do this, the directory the drawings are located in is the default directory...no luck.  When I do this, the path is still full path and not relative.

i believe what you want to do is start reference manager, select your reference file and edit path.
for the path you want to put "..\" "your folder" \ "another folder"

or however your files are in other folders.

so add dot dot slash ..\

You are able to select the Full Path/Relative Path/No Path option when you first attach an external reference file.  Once it is attached I am not sure that you can change this path setting, however you can look into the e-transmit which will remove path settings as an option.

I have done pretty much all that has been stated. We have directories that may have 183 drawings and these drawings are transferred from one directory to another depending upon the status of the job. This is a pretty standard procedure for MEP firms. For some reason I cannot seem to discover what it takes to do what Autocad says it will do......

The method I explained does work for me. Are your paths to your reference files under the initial sheet files?

Cadd (where your sheet files are)
   |-reference location 1
   |-reference location 2

are you swapping between 1 and 2 or outside of this initial tree of folders?

maybe a little more info would help. if this is something that is standard for MEP, what have you done in the past?

If your using the Reference Manager when it asks you for the new path just leave it blank.

All the x-ref's are located in the same directory as the sheet files. When we copy to another directory whcih indicates the next stage of design we copy the whole group not leaving anything out.

So in that case, you want to do what Will said and just strip the reference path. Just leave it blank.

As long as all your files in one folder that will work.

I did that. I stripped the file directgory usning the reference manager and when I went into the drawings the x-ref was still showing to be pathed full.

when all else fails, post a drawing to the lily pond and let us take a look.
if the paths are indeed stripped, it should work just fine.

Did you 'apply' the changes before closing the Reference Manager?

We had the same Problem in our Company, server location changed and all the xrefs were gone. We work with R2002.

I  found  there

a 30 days trial version I used. It works without opening Acad.

Maybe a solution for the moment………

...but doesn't this just change a 'hard-coded' path to another 'hard-coded' path?

I believe he wanted to set the paths relative.

I need the paths to be relative...if not as all well knows when we send a cd to the client with all files if all is set to relative then as long as the xrefs are in the same directory then all is well.

Unless you change folders a LOT, you might try using express tools REDIR.  It allows you to change directories from the command line - and I think you can make them relative as well.

Issue

You want to change absolute xref paths to relative paths in a drawing.

Solution

You can use either of the following methods to change absolute xref paths to relative paths, using AutoCAD® Express Tools software.

Method #1

Use the Express Tools command XPATH:

   1. On the Express menu, click File Tools > Edit Xref Path.

      Alternatively, enter xpath on the command line.

   2. Browse to drawing containing xrefs and click Add.
   3. Select all the xrefs whose paths you want to change.
   4. Enter ..\<drawing path>\ in the Replace With box.

      For example, if the xrefs are in K:\drawings\, enter ..\drawings\ in the Replace With box.

Method #2

Use the Express Tools command REDIR:

   1. On the Express menu, click File Tools > Path Substitution.

      Alternatively, enter redir on the command line.

   2. Specify which attachment types to redirect using the REDIRMODE command.
   3. Select the Xref option and clear the other options.
   4. At the Enter Old Directory prompt, enter the path to be replaced (for example K:\drawings\).
   5. At the Replace <original path> With prompt, enter the relative path you want (for example ..\drawings\).

I found that XPATH is gone in 2006.
