Inserting a small area of a drawing, Not all of it
« on: August 13, 2018, 08:34:29 AM »
This is going to sound crazy. But I got to ask.

I am messing around with a dwg of our state that has all the roads labeled. I am trying to figure out a way (Similar to MapImport with Shape Files). Where I can select the drawing. Then have a picking box for it to just import the objects in that area into the current drawing.

I know we could xref it in, then xclip it, but it is a massive dwg. (Takes awhile to load up).

Any ideas on this one?

Will the drawing you are referencing change frequently or at all? If it's static, just delete what you don't need and insert the remainder into your drawing.

it does change. But I am wondering if it just makes sense to take that drawing and convert it to a shape file to get it to do what I am wanting...

Just use Map and query what info you want. Or am i missing the whole point? :)

Good point. But the way the drawing is; it already in the right format visually.

When I mess with importing shape files. I usually have to do a lot of changing colors, linetypes etc.

I guess that is why I am asking about this approach.

it does look right when I xref it. Again, I know I can XClip it too, but that still keeps a lag on the drawing its referenced in as it opens it.

Then if you use Map and query just the info you want, using a window, then it should look like what you want.

Mark,

I think I like what you did. Did that import on the fly without manually placing the text?

Yes. The text and its size is determined in the dwg i queried from.
