label polyline contour elevations

I received a file that contains contours (polylines with elevation).  What I would like to do is label them with their elevations at specified distances along the polylines.  Does anyone have, or know of an AutoLISP routine that will allow me to do this?

I tried that, but the fields seem to have an error, because they just have #### for the text, and updating them seems to have no effect.
