Is there a way or a command that will allow you to explore the contents of an SHX file and find out what shapes are in it?

With SHX2SHP.exe you can decompile a .SHX font.
The result is an ascii-file that you can read/edit in a text editor (or open with lisp).

Or just draw some lines.
Design is something you should do with both hands. My 2d hand , my 3d hand ..

A small and old (but still valid, at least for Win7x64) application named shxviewer, can be found here.
