Disk storage ... down rhe road a bit.

putting things into perspective ...

Brewer points out that YouTube users are uploading one petabyte of new storage every day and at current growth rates that they should be uploading 10 petabytes per day by 2021.

Note that is uploading, not downloading or streaming :)

“A petabyte is a measure of memory or storage capacity and is 2 to the power of 50 bytes or, in decimals, approximately a thousand terabytes."

< ... >

If the average MP3 encoding for mobile is around 1MB per minute, and the average song lasts about four minutes, then a petabyte of songs would last over 2,000 years playing continuously.

< ... >

It would take 223,000 DVDs (4.7Gb each) to hold 1Pb.
called Kerry in my other life

Sometimes the question is more important than the answer.

Need more storage but in a smaller space? Problem solved.

Just YouTube, uploads! That is hard to comprehend.

Here is the white paper.

This paper introduces the concept of “data center” disks and describes the key goals and
metrics for these disks. The key differences fall into three broad categories: 1) the “collection
view” in which we focus on aggregate properties of a large collection of disks, 2) a focus on tail
latency derived from the use of storage for live services, and 3) variations in security
requirements that stem from storing others’ data. After covering each in more detail, we explore
a range of future directions to meet these goals.
