I just cracked open a drawing that has data shortcuts (it's a construction drawing for profiles) and saw a whole bunch of these...

First, what does it mean?  It doesn't look good so just how bad is it?  And how do I go about fixing (or removing) the messages?

That means the referenced object could not be resolved, so the profile cannot be rendered, so the labels have nothing to be attached to, so they are removed from the drawing. Which is usually not a good thing. You need to fix the shortcut so it can be found, before opening that drawing.
