section from pointcloud data
« on: February 09, 2012, 02:12:52 PM »
Working with AC2012 and ACbeta, I would like to get something done pointcloud data we made for our project. Found usefull documentation on the net. But how to get the right tools to create sections from my imported files? I heard that Autodesk doesn't want to support section features in vanilla Autocad anymore.

So, how to create a section from pointcloud data in Autocad?

Thanks in regard. Hans

probably from within Navisworks (Manage)

Or use Vport Clipping Planes....in regular autocad

What do you mean by 'viewport clipping planes'?

I figured out this workaround..

* read pointcloud in file
* set density and pointcloud properties
* open new DWG
* xref inported DWG with the data

* determine position of the sections
* xclipframe = 2
* make sectioons using xclip copies
* draw the 2D/3D polylines

Any other good routine or feedback

It doesnt do the job.
Only works in one way in one viewport

I'm a little confused, and maybe there is a difference in terminology.  Are you looking to just get a cross-section of data from a point cloud i.e. hide everything outside of a "slice" through the cloud?  Or are you looking to automatically generate an outline i.e. a "true" section view like slicing a solid?

The first is simple viewport clipping and/or point cloud tools.  AFAIK the second isn't done by many programs at all.  There may be one or two third-party ones which skin the cloud after which you can slice it using conventional AutoCAD tools.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.
