ROW Alignment parcels
« on: May 02, 2011, 01:24:34 PM »
Hello all,
First let me just say that I am new to both, Civil 3D and Forums. ( I read them a lot but have never posted) So if I am in the wrong spot for this post then I appoligize.

I have two question that seem like they have basic or simple answers, but have not found them as of yet.

1. I am about to start doing a 125 miles of ROW for the local electric company over several sections/parcels. And have been playing with parcel and alignment creations, and when I create ROW parcel from alignment it adds a extra bearing and distance at the corners of parcel. ( I am not sure how to discribe this any more accurate) I will paste a couple of pic's for visual pespective.

2. I need to change the point decription to show degree decimal min, not decimal degree.
any one have a list set up to place that to show as we have flown the line and the gps on the video shows up in degree decimal min and would like to have them shown on the points when I import them instead of manually changing every single point.

Thanks for any ideas/suggestions and or solutions you might have.

and I am using Civil 3D 2011.

Thanks Again,
            Max

The 'extra' parcels could be due to at least two things, on is the Parcel Parcel Intersection settings,
the other being overlapping parcel lines.  (If you send me a sample of your data,  I'll be able to say EXACTLY what is happening)

As to your point style settings. Those should be created on the settings tab, along with your Descripton Key Set.
The descriptions control what point, point symbol, and or label style is applied the instant you import your points.
Just be sure to select your desired format prior to hitting the Insert Component Arrow in the Label Style Composer.

Michael,

Thanks for you fast responce, I dont have any data right now just tring to make sure whe we receive that data it will all work together.

what I have done is create a rectangl pline then create parcel from objects, then drew a pline threw the rectangle at an angle, then create alignment from object, then create ROW(from parcel pull down tab on home ribbon), and then I have to join parcels in the right of way due to it making a separate parcel on both sides of alignmet, then I ad the lables, and for every section intersection I have a "filler" (for lack of a better term) at the end of the pacel line.

sorry if this is not what you are asking, but only way I know to explain.

let me try to reproduce that issue here....in the mean while send me a copy of your file...

there are a couple tutorials on my site for creating description keys and point styles (free)

Those 'filler' segments are ALL your fault.   ;-)

When you draw those fictional alignments at WIERD angles to your rectacle, there are places where the centerline crosses the parcel boundary in such a fashion that if you imagine offsetting the original polyline one side would be too long, and the other would be short. C3D is compensating by inserting a parcel segment for this protraction of the centerline to the parcel line on the obtuse angle side of the centerline.
One should be able to use the parcel creation toolbar to edit (join) this segment away. Or break the two apart, delete the segment, and then extend the altcual ROW parcel boundary to the parcel boundary.  I'm guessing in your case those parcels are actual sections, and lot splits from records.

yes from deeds of record and section lines and so on....
and I figured it was my fault, and I understood what it was doing by compensating. so my next question, is there a way to turn off the setting that is causing the compensation, as you know going 125 miles will be very tedeous to adjust each individual parcel. I mean there is no tell how many land owners from record there will be, but if that is what has to be done well I guess im in fro a lot of long nights.
or do I have something turned on that might be the problem? or off?

when I inform you that your parcles from those alignments are NOT dynamically linked to that alignment any longer...you might consider NOT using that tool...also as it will not allow aysymetric creation there are instances where it might also fail...like along the side of a siction line where you have no adjoining data...(not know the scope of the project) this is a real possibility.

one might just want to create parcels from the records...including those along existing alignments....

To the best of my knowledge there is no similar command to the polylines' Trim/No Trim option setting for this tool.
Or simply by being aware of this inherent flaw feature in the application one can fix as you go and not loose too much sleep over it.

Michael,

I just finished watching your video about points, very informative. thank you for letting me download it.
But I still need to know how to ceate a user defined propery classification that uses Degrees, Decimal, Min,  not Degree, Min, Sec.
I fooled around with what you were talking about on the video, but I dont think I understood if this was either on the video or I missed it.
and maybe I am not asking the question corectly, another user error. :ugly: I know how to import the points just not how to get them to show what I need.
I have tried to change the setting but they always convert back to Degree, Min, Sec. I was able to get the time stamp and a few other special modification to work but obviously not this one.

thanks again for any help,
Max

or is this for points northing, easting labels?

Got there right now..

OK, the process is
Create or Edit a Label Style
ADD a text component or modifiy exisitng....
select the Latitude/Longitude component...
you will be doing this at least twice....
scroll to bottom and change the output from FULL to the portion you want...
hit the insert Arrow...
select the Latitude/Longitude component...
scroll to bottom and change the output from FULL to the portion you want...
hit the insert Arrow...
continue building your label in this fashion....
or one could do this with additional text components, sliced and diced as required

and have a nice day!

the above portion is not in that video...that is more of a basics concept production

this is just a little further up the learning curve.

Thanks again we will give this a try..
it will look something like the attached:

<[Longitude(Udeg|FDMSDec|P0|RN|DPSn|CU|AP|EY|DZY|OF)]><[Longitude(Udeg|FDMSDec|P1|RN|DPSn|CU|AP|EY|DZY|ODS)]><[Longitude(Udeg|FDMSDec|P1|RN|DPSn|CU|AP|EY|DZY|ORD)]>

Michael this is what we need it to look like 35█34.39918'

the "█" is the degree symbol, unable to get it to come in here.

we messed with this for a while last night but were unable to reach this format, any other sugestions?

thanks again

you may need to create an expression...to perform the math to return the value you are after...this may or may not require creating a user defined proprty for both Latitude, and Longitude such that the expression operators can operate on them
I'm just not sure what that math would be TBH.

OK, so the formaul a is:

Degrees Minutes Seconds to Degrees Minutes.m
Degrees = Degrees
Minutes.m = Minutes + (Seconds / 60)

So you could do this...
Create all your points...create a new point file format that includes Lat Long Deg, Minutes and Seconds...export your points using that format, then reimport them
Then a user defined property for each value, then do the math use the resultant in your label

Ok thank you, we were thinking we needed to create an expression from all that we read, but were not sure and not sure how.
this will help a ton.

we will give this a try, I will let you know how this works as soon as I can.

and thanks for being so patient with me, Max

Michael,

we have been trying to get this to work for several days now, while I know the theory is correct, I am not sure how to implement this...is there a good book out there that teaches how to write expressions? or do you have any ideas?
I am having problems with understanding what it is they are asking for when trying to write the expression.
I dont mind looking it up but not sure if you had a quick sugestion(s) as to a good learning tool that would teach me how to write expressions. any help is appreciated.

Max

Or anyone else out there have any ideas, dont mean to exclude any advise some one might have..I need all the help I can get at this point :-(
