(C3D '09) Surface from DEM
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:07:42 AM »
I'm creating a surface from a dem file, so far so good, the dem is in UTM83-17M, my dwg is state plane feet. When I create the surface it is not even close to where I'm working, not surprising. So how does one translate(?) this dem to another coordinate system?

thanks

and this is where the lack of MAP functionality really bites hard.....

let me see what can be done....

you may....need to resort to all kinds of trickery...

like import the DEM into a file set to UTM.....
set the surface style to show triangles and points (as autocad nodes)
Export that data out to autocad
set up a file on your stateplane system...and then query in the data from the file you created in the steps above
let map translate the CS
THEN
from points menu create points from those autocad objects, etc, etc and build the DEM surface from that....

That's about the best I could come up with too.

Why do you need any trickery?

Assign a coordinate system to the drawing, create a surface, add the DEM, assign the appropriate coordinate system to the DEM in the options.  Done.

Can you provide a screen shot or more info because I don't see 'options'.

Thanks. I can't see the image because of our proxy server, I'll check it out when I get home.

I can see that. But I can't change that setting. :-/

Are you using 2010?

Never mind, I see it now.

Well that didn't work either. It's off about 81,000 feet. :)

Thanks for that Reno, I hadn't seen that option under DEMs before.

Is it working YET there Mark?

First thing I would do is to make sure you drawing is at the correct location.  Draw a line representing a large, easily identifiable feature, and export it to google earth.

Yeah. Lets just say it was 'operator error' and leave it at that. The suggested solution that reno made, does indeed work. Many thanks for that!

But of course C3D crashes often ... with LARGE data sets. *sigh*

oh you wanted that data!!

it is suggested that the INSTANT you get that DEM surface into a file you immediately start to use a data shortcut to it.....it may not help...however that is what THEY say should be done with 'large' data sets

Oh, C3D doesn't crash very often...

I just looked at my log file, and it only crashed twice for me yesterday, and eight times last week...

I'll try that. Thanks for the reminder. :)
