Is the user name required for the Autodesk License?
« on: November 30, 2010, 05:33:53 PM »
Is the user name required for the Autodesk License?  Will it give it me the proverbially no if I don't fill the user name when I go to install Autocad?

Currently we are configuring a power user's box to non-power user.  The power user got a new box.  I notice that when I look at the "About Autocad" the license was still license to the power user thus making it look like the power user is running two install at the same time.   The power user is now a super power user!

We wondering if we would get a knock on the door by the Autodesk Police.  Then we got to wondering if the user name be could left blank.

Just asking.

Pretty doubtful.  It's a meaningless field.

Besides, what's wrong with one dude using more than one license? ;)

At home, I license my software to random historical figures or porn stars.

There are currently 3 computers with my name on them, and the one I'm currently using is merely CADD01, lol.  We've not been inspected, yet. ;)

Best I can tell, all they give a hoot about is the number of users verse number of licenses.

The name does not matter
When you clicked the about box click the product info and see type license then click license agreement and will spell it out for you

The only issue with licensing and names is that when you register the software to get the key, you must provide the correct registered name, address, and phone number else you may experience delay in obtaining a license key.

At a previous job, the ITwit used his own personal information to purchase and register all of our CAD installations, although the local installations were labelled as registered to the current user. When we upgraded our hardware and software we found out that we didn't have the information required to get a key. Ultimately we had to spend several days running back and forth between our reseller and Autodesk before they would provide us with the keys to license the installation.

That's weird.  I just had to correspond with autodesk on the same issue a couple months ago.  All I had to do was send them company name (exactly) and subscription number.

Maybe it's just easier when on subscription.

As you suggested, it might be easier if you are on subscription.

The problem for us was that Autodesk was convinced that we were tring to install a product licensed to someone else. This guy had used his own name, home address, and his own phone number when purchasing the licenses. In the end, the reseller had to convince Autodesk and provide documentation that our company was the one that had actually purchased the licenses and we had to provide an affadavit that the ITwit had purchased it as an agent of our company.

It took a few days, but we did get it worked out.

Not necessarily.  Sometimes its difficult to get approval for things, or the administrative process is overly complex (or seen as being so), especially when "connected" users are complaining loudly.  At that point its much easier to simply pay for it yourself and sneak the paperwork through the backdoor later on.

That wasn't the case for us. We had long been approved for the purchase of 10 seats, we were just waiting on hardware upgrades ... and corporate paid the fees when they came due. If I remember correctly the only thing that saved our ass was that Autodesk could see where the payment came from. If the seats had been paid for by the ITwit and he had been reimbursed for them, as far as Autodesk would be concerned, he ordered them, paid for them, and registered them in his name. Our only recourse would have been to find some guy who no longer worked for the organization and try to recover our losses ... and when you are dropping $30k you aren't going to be getting it out of some guy making $50k a year, at least not anytime soon.

Anyway, it worked out for us AND we found out that we actually had 10 licenses (the ITwit told us he ordered 8)

Technically, each registration field requires a minimum of 2 characters.
The other points raised are more important.
