Profile Station Grid & Label Spacing
« on: September 23, 2009, 04:47:03 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how to have my major grid lines spaced @ 20' yet my major station labels spaced @ 100'. So far I haven't accomplished it (but not trying that long yet). Could I get some hints?

All in the Profile Label Set, Major Grid Label distance, and weeding...

Oh yeah and your Band Set that you are applying to that profile view style....

so your major grid ticks are at 20', what are your minors set at?

one could suggest you invert the Major, and minors in the profile grid style....

or you are going to set this to 20' and have NO Tick Label

then you will have to configure a band set to place the actual labels that you desire under or on top of the profile view.

what are you attempting to accomplish graphically?

leave the major, and minors OUT of your description...

the instant you assign a distance of 20 to the MAJOR grid increment you hose your ability to use the normal profile grid labels...

so perhaps you might want to post us a little 'picture' of what you are after....and then we'll tell you how to get that particular effect in C3D?

See attached pdf. The top is my c3d profile view that I'm working on. The bottom is dumb autocad lines and text I'm trying to mimic more or less. As you can see the major grid is spaced at 20' and minor at 10' (Oh sorry I mentioned major and minor). The labels are only every 100' though. I thought maybe in the band set I could tell it only to label every hundred feet and then I could get it to place said labels within the actual profile view, but haven't figured out how yet.

(I exaggerated the line widths of the major grids so you wouldn't have to zoom in to see them)

OK, this, or that is what I thought you were attempting to do.
This configuration is going to require use of band sets, the label entity will be INCREMENTAL distance
you will simply have to explore the GAP distance setting (Band Set Style) for the Data Band in order to nudge it up under the profile as you desire.

OR,
the Easy way out...stack TWO profile views atop each other and use a common insertion point, one created during the Create Profile from surface operation, the second created using the Create Profile View command.

I think I'll go with the band set option first and see where that takes me. Gracias.

I'll post the results.

your challenge arises in that you really want to use a

Station Grid @ 100 foot interval
a Primary Grid @ 20
a Secondary Grid @ 10

and C3D does NOT have those elements in the Profvile View Style.

The band set should however meet your needs.

NOTE: Did not use the words major or minor grid?   ;-)

2008 does not appear to have the INCREMENTAL distance option...

I see profile view Stacking..as your option...as the INSTANT you set Major Station interval in your Profile View Style
THEN you are stuck with THAT distance as the MAJOR grid increment, when really you want a Stationing Grid Increment of 100.

Time to drop back and punt...Stack them profile styles.

That kinda sucks... Oh well...

Copying profile views is a safe procedure right? I figure it would be quicker to just copy a profile view and apply another style as opposed to creating a new view via the Profile menu.

I've copied them before and never really had trouble doing it, but you never know when C3d will decide to be temperamental.

yes, a copy in-place would work, and then change the viewstyle, and turn off the various profile components, or change their styles in the view to a No Display style will work...
I might even be inclined to copy my alignments so that I wouldn't have to do this last step at all...
Depending on the project it might be easier to manage the extra alignments, then to remember to turn off the profiles in that view....

Here's what I have now. I created an extra pv style as well as a band set to give me the option to OMIT (NOT SUPPRESS) the first and last stations.

I'm not sure I follow where you're going with copying the alignment...?

well, because the profile views are dynamic...as you sample, and or create additional Vertical information along that alignment, C3D is going to ALSO draw it in the copied view, this may not work in all instances, as labels and such might get dragged around, and then you would need to drag the second one...

however if that other PV is coming from a copy of the alignment....then you wont have to contend with duplicate Profile objects in your copied PV's

Just me thinking ahead for you ;)
