Text w/ 3D Face - problem
« on: March 25, 2008, 03:34:38 PM »
Hey -
I have a problem....and there is a simple solution but who says I go for the simple things....

I have a piece of text that when I select it the properties says that it is two items

First a piece of text (no problem there)
But it also says it is a 3D Face

The 3D Face has edges turned off.
I can not rotate the text because of the Face
I can not explode or burst the text

It says that it is part of 2 unnamed groups that I can't do anything with.

OK, yes the simple solution is to delete them (at least 10) and redo the text.  But my complicated side asks, "how did they do it and why?"

Any explanations out there?

Maybe so it shows during rendering?

Without having anything to go on, I can only guess.

That is something that I forgot to say.....

It is only a 2D drawing that shows the layout of bridge girders....everything at 0 elevation.....
Only the text has a 3D face....

OK, here is the file...
I found a way to break the link when I was doing this....
By copy/paste it gets rid of the 3D Face....
What I have attached still has the problem in it...

Like a TEXTMASK (covers the stuff behind the text so it can be read, usually pops up as "Raster image" on properties tho)?  What happens if you turn on WIPEOUT (WIPEOUT > FRAMES > ON) and turn off object grouping (OPTIONS > Selection tab > Object Grouping checkbox)?

I can't find the text that is also a 3dface.

At first I thought maybe they had used 'explode text' on a TTF but that results in 2D plines not 3dfaces... I was wrong there.

erm...

I found something else very wierd, though.  Your north arrow is apparently a "SOLID" but... it has only 2 dimensions.  It lists 4 points, but they all have z=0.  Pretty odd, to me.

If you select individually the text that labels each girder you will should find it.
Yeah, I saw the north arrow problem too...
That is going to get wiped out and replaced....
I really hate legacy drawings.....

Such as "GIRDER "B" " ?

I list it as nothing but a text object, though it does show it's in a group.

Code: [Select]
Command: li LIST 1 found

                  TEXT      Layer: "SV-CNTL-PROP-STA"
                            Space: Model space
                   Handle = ba8a
                   Groups = *A3, *A5
             Style = "STANDARD"
        Annotative: No
             Font file = SIMPLEX.shx  SPECIAL.shx
             start point, X=-451.705816  Y=169.889792  Z= 0.032000
            height  1.600000
              text GIRDER "D"
          rotation angle 0d16'13.12"
             width scale factor  1.000000
         obliquing angle 15d0'0.00"
        generation normal

You're using 2008 or older?
That is odd.

Gael,

The issue seems to be that previous user employed a 3d face instead of a TEXTMASK object. Futher their process created numerous unnamed groups to keep those faces and text objects 'locked' together.
There is most likely a MAP process we could use to strip out those unwanted faces, and or groups.

I have used 2d solids in the past, usually in place of a solid hatch. AutoCAD didn't like hatching using XREF objects as boundaries. It used to be parked right above 3D face in the draw/surfaces menu.
