( LDT 2004 ) Startup and Project Manager slow to open
« on: December 11, 2007, 01:15:02 PM »
I'm not sure this is specific to LDT but!! When I open LDT it takes for ever. Once it's running and I got to Projects->Project Manager that takes a long time too. I've reset all the paths so they point to a different server (local) and checked the paths under Options, still not luck. It's better than it was but not good enough. The only project path at the moment is on my local drive. This does use a network license though. I'm out of ideas here. Has anyone seen this behavior before?

thanks

This also happens with New too. And no service packs installed.

The program is old and tired . . . retire it . . . sorry Mark, I couldn't resist.

Where are you pointing for your QNew template?  That may be a bad file or in a different location than specified.

It's pointed to a network share, same as 06 which doen't display the same problems.

I've also found that Mapped drives that cannot be found (whether a part of the LDT path structure or not) will do exactly this. I have a network drive S: that is only for 1 old laptop's C:\ drive. It is rarely connected so if I don't unmap it when not needed everything LDT related crawls at startup.

Thanks Jeff. I checked all the network drives and all are active. Still looking ....

looks as if someone has attempted roaming profiles, not a good idea unless ALL machine variable are identical

I ran into something similar to that after changing our office network once.

I finally did a search for the old server name in the registry, and it turned up several items deep in the guts of my Autocad/LDT configuration that were still pointed at the old server.  After resetting those items, my performance got back to normal.

That and a few others are defined in the registry under AutoCAD, and they point to the local machine. I can't see where that's the problem.

I've gone through the registry and removed any paths that pointed to our Corp. office and changed them to a local network share. Still no love. *sigh*

Acad '06 uses the same license manager server so I've ruled that out for the time being.

Everyone in this office has the same problem so I'm guessing it's network related but I can't prove that.

thanks for all the replies.

If it's network related, it should be straightforward to diagnose it....

my process would start with port mirroring at the switch level the port of both machines to somemachine that can open a promiscuous interface, capture the packets, time correlate the captive packets again your logs... in samba I would just increase my log level (to scary levels) and pretty quick you will figure out if it's a host name resolution problem, some sort of tragic packet loss problem, or a security level issue.

My guess is that you have host resolution issues, becuase if things are just slow for the first time you browse for file (project manager) I would try to make it faster by makign the resolution quicker.

I'm sorry I can't be of much help if you are on a 2003 windows server or something, I sorta jumped off the windwos server bandwagon in the 90s.

Have you disabled the digital signature search?

Nope, that's one I haven't thought of.

I don't have access to the server logs ( don't wont to either ) but I'm guessing the admin(s) have looked at them, they are well aware of the problem.

But if it is a name lookup problem why would it be just LDT, why not any software that access the network?

Sorry, when I said "network related" I was thinking of a bad path in the softwares registry/config settings.

YEP, that's right, however, some programs like some versions of acad do their own lookup independent of explorer.

I've got the start up time down to under 1 minute. :-)

Everything loads normally until it gets to the LDD stuff. i.e.

Code: [Select]
Loading AecDraft...
Loading AecLS...
Loading AecCivilApp...
Initializing...
Loading AecCivilCogo...
Loading AecCivilDraft...
Loading AecTreeMgrAcad...
Loading AecSurfaceMgr...
Loading AecCivilDtm...

I'm going to suggest something radical.
DELETE the ARG file that Land is calling from your desktop icon.
Delete any reference to it in your REGISTRY (all requisite warnings implied)
Then restart Land

There isn't a reference to 'lddt.arg' in the registry, there is however 'Land Desktop' under profiles.

... and removing that from the registry will leave you without LDT, you get Map instead.

Removing the 'lddt.arg' didn't make any difference.

Mark,

Still looking at your reg file; nothing seems to be out of sorts.  I'll be looking at it some more to be sure.

Have you attempted a repair install?

If it were my choice I would have reinstalled it a long time ago! At the moment they won't let me install any acad stuff.

I don't see where anyone asked about any Virus Sacanner in use. So, is there? May need to exclude DWG, DWT, ARX files from it's automatic checking.

I thought about that too Jeff but Map and vanilla are not affected, only LDT.

thanks for all the comments folks.

Mark,

You might want to check this nugget:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2879786&linkID=9240777

Thanks Michael. But .... :-)

Code: [Select]
C:\Program Files\Civil Series 2004>du -h sdsk.dfm
8.0K    sdsk.dfm

C:\Program Files\Civil Series 2004>grep "PNTFMT" sdsk.dfm

I was hoping that was it unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.
