CAD Machines Revisited

Hey All ;)
I know this has been addressed before, but I think it's been long enough that at least some of you have newer computers and such.  I'm wondering what everyone's using to CAD on.  I would just like to know where I sit, I guess.

Dell Optiplex GX270
Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 1)
Pentium IV 2.8GHz
512 MB of Ram
10.0 Mbps Win2K Network

AutoCAD 2004
Raster Design 2004

I'm having a bunch of problems with lag and crashes and I'm wondering how much our Virus Scanner (F-Secure) has to do with it if anything.
First of all, what are you running?  Secondly, have you got any ideas as to why I'd be getting these annoying lags?  Is 512 not enough ram or what?

Thanks everyone!

Mark

512 is plenty of RAM. That's what I'm running. My virus pac is McAfee. I am not hsving your problems. My pooter is basically the same as yours  3GHz Dell Precision360/512MB RAM/40GB HD/XP Pro w/SP1.
I am still running ACAD14 and XP Pro doesn't like it. I think your problem is going to be with a piece of software that you have that is older than XP PRO.

Dub,

Can you give some examples of when you crash? Is it opening the drawing? During panning? More info will be easier to troubleshoot.

The company hooked me up with this Dell earlier this spring. Dell Precision Workstation 360 It came with a 17" LCD screen, but I decided I liked my old 20" CRT much better and kept it. They wouldn't let me have both unfortunately. I would love to load a few games from home on it. Blows my home pc away ... for now.   That will change come September/November when I plan on building a new one based on the BTX and PCI Express formats.

Sorry Ron, I missed that post.
It doesn't really 'crash' too often at all, but the lags happen at very odd times.  Most of our network resides on the O:\ drive.  There are many directories under that drive.  One of them is Drawings.  Under drawings, there are TONS of directories.  The only time I ever really get the lag is when I'm using any kind of file system dialog box such as Open, Save As, Insert, etc...most of the directories are fine, but when I browse to O:\Drawings, it takes up to and over 3 minutes to display the folders.  I have no idea why.  Browsing to the root of O:\ is fine, all directories under O:\Drawings\ are fine, but that one (the one I browse to most often) is really p!$$!ng me off!!!  It seemed to go a little faster after I did a disk cleanup, but nothing too drastic.  I'm not sure if there's some kind of setting I made or sketchy application I've installed or what...I'll see when I finish loading the other CAD guy's computer which happens to be identical to mine.  I'm going to test it before and after I install each program.  Maybe the process of elimination will tell me what to do.
Any ideas?

By the way, Thanks to everyone who's responding to my original post.  Some of you are pretty lucky, but I think that's all relative.

Speaking of slow loading....we have 2Ki on an old machine here and 2K4 on my "hot rod".  For some reason, when I try to open a dwg in our STDS folder (tons of files here) they open almost instantly on the old crank and take FOREVER on my new one.  I understand that 2K4 compresses files....could that be the problem and what can I do about it .... besides a commando raid on Autodork.....
