Hello all,

Just to start us off.

What Standards do You use now?
What are the advantages of you Standards?
What are the disadvantages of you Standards?

Do you have a say in how you Standards are developed?

Our standards vary (don't scream just yet) according to client.

Having said that there are those issues within standards that tend to be the same spec to spec, or at the very least, are noted as issues that require standardization.

My suggestion, which I started by example, is that we list each item or issue as a separate thread, thereby making it easier down the road to find all the discussions related to a particlar item.

= Just a thought =

Continuing ...

The advantage of adhering to standards, beyond producing deliverables the client will actually accept, is that it makes the work consistant and the ability to convert to other standards (and that frequently happens: convert from client A to client B) is improved.

Everone should have input on standards. :)

We too have clients that have thier own in house standards. (U.S.Army Corps of Engineers primarily) The "in-house" drafting standards are based on the Corps setup, long established general mapping symbols and ansi standards. I set up the details. I prepare the drawing base, so I must be careful with layer names. The client will have a detailed system that I should not clash with, thus my layer names tell you what is on that particular layer (ie. klayers "concrete, asphalt, elec., etc.)

I recall looking at the Army's spec years ago and I don't recall them sanctioning hard coded colors or linetypes. :)

Better look again. They are VERY specific as to color, line types, etc.

Thank you for the link Dent.

I had a look, but I could not find specifics on individual entity properties. However I only spent 5 minutes there, and don't really wish to make a career of the search.

Riddle me this, if they sanction hard coded colors and linetypes on an entity basis why would they specify the color and linetypes for layers, which they do? The latter is entirely superfluous if they sanction the former (if you think about it). :)

We use CIBSE standards, but i'm looking to incorporate BS1192 pt 5, into our standards, this deals with data exchange for CAD systems.

This is the best thread for this comment:

What works very well for Civil does not always work for Survey.
What works well for Architectural wouldn't be practical for others.
We all have different methods according to the needs of our clients, municipalities, and the needs our our compaies.

Use the standards that work best for you and stay consistent in their use.

BS1192 pt 5 has been designed to incoporate all disciplines into using the same CAD standards, so the architect can use the structural engineers data, and the services engineer can use both, with no changes required to the drawing.

a kind of services nirvana, which one day I hope to achieve....aye and pigs might fly, or England might win a penalty shoot out

Oh, the dream of a perfect CAD standard for everyone.

Sounds to good to be true, especially knowing how most of us HUMANS want things our own way.
