Frustrating points
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:03:48 PM »
I am trying to import a file which contains only 65 points...however it is turning out to be more of a nightmare than an easy task. I am using LDD 2006...I have also verified that I am using the correct import format (PNEZD) and have even tried to create a new format just in case, but each time it tells me no points were transferred from the source. I have even gone in and edited the point file manually to verify that all the points are correct and so on. Below is the EXACT way that the points are shown and displayed in the file....

101,5000.0000,5000.0000,0.0000,SETPK
102,5000.0000,5290.1600,0.0000,TGT

Obviously i have not included all the points here, but I am just so confused as what to do and I have a deadline that is approaching fast on me...I did tried some other point files that I have that are delimited the same, and they work just fine...can someone please help me or point me to the nearest wall to release some of this headache :D

Are you specifying PENZD COMMA delineated or [PNEZD u]SPACE[/u] delineated?

I am using comma delimited, but still no go...i have even tried doing a transfer from comma to space, yet it still gives me the same error each time i try to do it. it does transfer the points correctly to the new format, but just will not import them and keeps saying no points transferred. it doesn't even matter if i use auf, xyz or any format i have available.

How did you create that file?  How are you viewing it?

When I try to open it, I can only read every other line.  All your points with even numbers are garbage.  It doesn't matter what program I use.

Originally it was sent to me by a survey crew...their file was not a normal ascii point file so I had to edit it, I used normal notepad from within windows...i don't know what happened, but i re-wrote the point file manually in notepad because of what you said, and then tried to import the points, and everything went through perfectly fine....anyone have any clue as to what could cause this or why it would happen? thanks for the help

I have a clue, however lest I take off from an assumption I need you to send me a copy of the original unmodified file, and the Make and Model of the Survey Data collector used to create it.  From the file posted, as SINC points out; this is not an ASCII file Willard.

What kind of coordinate file did they send you CR5? RW5? CRD?

Well I can send the original file I had received from the surveyors, but I can't even tell you what type of data collector was used...See, I am do the survey map for a survey company, but they actually had another survey company survey the project!!!! I will at least post the original point file, and maybe from the formatting you can tell, but besides that I can't really help too terribly much....the orginal file that they had sent to me was an rtf that they had converted from their data collector...all i can say is HEADACHE! :D When I get the opportunity, I will post the file as I had received it and maybe it can help somewhat  :|.

This is the file that I had received from them...EXACTLY as it was sent to me too. All I had originally done was delete the junk, add an elevation of 100.00 or 0.00...cant remeber that part right now :|, and then i just adjusted it to a comma delimited point file...and again, all i used was windows notepad, nothing fancy or jazzed up.

Tell them next time to send you a comma delimited ASCII file of the points ... not a report. Just curious, how did you open that file with Notepad, it's in rtf format.

maybe it was wordpad then lol...like i said, i wasn't using anything abnormal like office or openoffice....its was just the basic editor....I have already told the survey company that i am working with to talk to their sub, but if it ever gets fixed....who knows?!?!?!?! :D Thanks a million for everyone's help.

It opens fine on my pootyer with note pad. This is a converted CSV file (see the header). What you can do is open this thing in EXCEL, set up the columns like you need and then save it as a CSV file. Then rename that file to TXT or ASC, which ever you prefer and then import the points into your AutoCad drawing as a PNEZD (Comma Delimited file).

If you generally work with .CSV files, you can also edit the Import Format for "PNEZD (Comma Delimited File)" so that it uses .CSV files (or leave the default one alone, and create a new Import Format that uses .CSV file).  Then you don't have to constantly rename coordinate files.

well normally, the surveyor i am working with sends me a nez file and i have no problems what-so-ever. Like I said, i re-wrote the point file manually due to time restrictions and not being able to figure out what was going on. I would have done the import to excel, and then exported to a csv, but it just so happens that i was in the process of getting openoffice installed, and didnt have any real options besides manually re-writing it as far as i could tell at the time. it just struck me as extremely odd because i have never had the no points transferred pop-up ever before...scared me more than anything, and made me think something was wrong with my cad install, but thankfully it was not that bad.

As others noted the file is RTF, the file they probably should have sent is the one shown in the header:
 C:\Documents and Settings\LEE\Desktop\LASER INDUSTRIES INC\HARRIS LAYOUT INC SURVEYING FOLDER\ELMWOOD DR.csv

For future reference, you might try creating a GENERIC TEXT PRINTER in Windows; then you could print the file using that printer and the output should be usable ASCII text only.  You will need to open the file and scrub out any unwanted header information, before a quick trip through Excel, to export as a usable CSV file.
