MODELING A 3D GARAGE?
« on: February 09, 2007, 02:22:02 PM »
I have never done model a garage in 3D  This is for my dad he wants me to draw his garage in 3D plus an addition to his garage.  What do you model when you are drawing say garages in 3D?  Is it just the outside surfaces?  Or do you add all studs and rafters and garage doors and such?  Thanks for any feedback

You could draw all of the studs, rafters, etc... and THEN do a materials takeoff, but if all you want is a pretty picture I would just draw walls, doors, windows and a roof using ADT.

What software are you running??

My program adds all the wall framing automagically.

I would say if you are just doing it for a pretty picture though you could just do the surfaces.

I will be using I-Deas at work

I think just the out side surface will work great

wow That would be cool to add all the framing automatically.  Does it add like all the cripples and headers and corner stuff?

Thanks for the feedback

You cad model it steps and film it to show it going up.   Like Hole dug, then slabs, then Wall studs then trusses, then ...,  then ...; you get the idea.  The play movie to your DAD.
I + XI = X is true ...  ... if you change your perspective.

I no longer CAD or Model, I just hang out here picking up the empties beer cans

Best part is that took...  *lessee  1:32 to 1:54, takes off shoes, count's toes.......*  22 minutes to make that model.

Of course that is a very simple model but.....

Greg's missing his left pinky toe. Hey, you could get 22 if you count your head, Greg.

ADT opened it with no problem though none of the fancy rendering material came with it.  Unless I didn't hit the right switch.   :|
But I had fun playing with it. I really wanted the hole.

That is just the solids and surfaces.  The rendering is applied from a material file that is saved from each job (or applied to a new job) that applies all the bitmap/jpeg textures from a directory.  I have one master material file that has neutral colors and so on that I will show customers first and then start changing that to which colors they want.  Tough to get it perfect to what they want but...... if they are willing to pay for the time to do so......

With an addon you can buy for $600 it can make a material list.  However I only know of a very few people who have made it work for them efficiently.  It's a ton of work to set up and one has to draw and build the model in a specific way.  I've just never been able to justify the time needed to make it effective.  Like many things in the long run it would probably pay off but..... not for us.
