trouble with a shape file
« on: August 21, 2006, 04:37:20 PM »
I am trying to insert a shape file into a CAD drawing (LDD2000). I am ignoring data elemts with no coordinate conversion. when I try to import, CAD locks up. My processor is at 99%. I even tried to let it run all night!

Any ideas on this?

Anyone know of a good program to convert a shape file to DXF??

I don't know much about importing SHP files and nothing about working with them in 2000, but if you can post the thing, I will try to get it to work.

-edit-

scratch that - now I see the attached file.  I will see what I can do with it.

OK, 2006 was REAL cranky about it but I imported the shape into a drawing file.  Here is the r2000 DWG file - I have a DXF if you need it but it is almost 6mb

That massive purge sure didn't get rid of a lot, did it?

Dino: RCZ.dwg (1535.2 KB - downloaded 2 times.)
Mine: RCZ.dwg (1524.76 KB - downloaded 0 times.)

No more fatal error, but the CPU maxes out, but CAD is still running. I will try to let it run for a while and see what happens.

The dxf has the fatal error also.

I have a 1.85 ghz processor with 1.5gb ram

Just for grins, I tried a purge and got no change at all.  Then I saved the file and it grew larger.

The thing only has 38 polylines in it on one layer - I don't know what is taking up the space.

There must be something wrong in translating to the old formats, 2006 opens it with no problems.

This might be a lot to ask, but can you save maybe half of the polylines in a block for me?

If that doesn't work, here are the two major drainages in 2000

nope, that didn't work, maxed the cpu again. I'll try the two major drainages

Can you even open the files with AutoCAD?

no, I sure can't. Everything maxes out the cpu and / or fatal error. Can you block out say the nw quarter of the map and upload for me? I think this is all I need anyway.

Have you tried inserting it into a blank drawing?

tried inserting it into a blank drawing, I got the fatal error with that.

Let me restart my machine and see if I can insert then.

These things are closed LWPollylines.  I exploded the one you seemed most interested in having.

Dino is the man!!!

worked fine that time.

This soves the immediate problem, but why do you people think it happened like this? Am I going to continue to have these problems?

I don't think LWpolylines were native to r2000 files.  That is why I exploded it - made it huge, but something 2000 could understand.
I think you are going to have to have something that can import 2004 format files or keep having problems with newer data.

I am glad I was able to help - just wish the solution had come quicker for you.  I think there was also something not quite right with your SHP file.  I know it took a LONG time for 2006 to bring it into a drawing considering there were only 38 entities.  You might have been able to use it directly if not for whatever was going on with that.  My 2006 may have made the entities to be LWpolylines on its own and thus caused the problem.  I skipped using r14 and the entire r2000 dwg format and am not sure which entities they will read.
