Quadro SLI, anyone?
« on: October 21, 2006, 11:43:56 AM »
Is anyone using the new Quadro SLI on their system?  In theory, it sounds like it should be completely transparent to Autocad.  And it sounds like you don't even have to get a new motherboard - from what I've seen, it's possible to just by a connector to attach the two graphics cards.

An FX 1400 fits in the budget for a new computer, and adding another FX 1400 later would probably be easy to get approved, easier than getting a $1000+ graphics card.  I've been wondering what it might be like to run Autocad on an E6700 with a Raptor RAID, 4GB PC6400 RAM, and two FX 1400s...

Don't you need an SLI motherboard?

All I know is this:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_sli_faq.html

That seems to indicate that you can get an SLI connector.  In the requirements section, it merely calls for two graphics cards and a connector; it says nothing about an SLI MOBO.  And the only SLI MOBO's I've seen claim to be for the GeForce cards, not the Quadros.  I admit, it's rather vague, which is why I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it...

I've been wondering if I should try to get an FX 3450 instead...  In scoping out components for the new machine, I ended up somewhat below my budget, even though I included 4GB of RAM.  If I only got 2GB of RAM, I could get an FX 3450 instead of an FX 1400 and be right at the limits of my budget.  That's a pretty powerful graphics card that should last quite a while...  And I could add another 2GB of RAM later.
