How to charge a client for customization
« on: August 11, 2005, 04:18:19 PM »
I have a client/friend who is in the same industry as I am. The company he works for wants me to customize AutoCAD (basic pull down menus), block libraries, etc. I've been tweaking it for the last ten years, so I have it down to a science.
What should I charge them? It will take about an hour or so to load everything and set all the paths. I'm lost on this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

charge a flat fee for the product, then an hourly rate on top of that for setup.

For the flat fee, it depends on a lot of things.  Are you giving them lsp, fas, dvb, arx, etc... files?

Depends where you live i guess, but I charge 125 hr and people are more than willing to pay it.  Thats not a lot of money when you add up time and effort for them to do it them selves
Everyone has a photographic memory, Some just don't have film.
They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy Bacon and that's a close second.
Sometimes the question is more important than the answer. (Thanks Kerry for reminding me)

They're getting just the .mnu and my entire block library. No lisps. They're new in the business and have no idea what AutoCAD even is or what it is capable of doing.

I would charge a couple of hundred for the block library and $100/hr for the setup minimum.  Not knowing what's in the block library makes it harder to value but it's got to be worth at least that.  Another option is, if you plan to recieve a lot of work from said client/friend's company, you could do it gratis.  Hell you could even use it as a business marketing write-off that way.
