AMD X2 vs Intel Core 2 Duo
« on: July 20, 2006, 09:18:07 AM »
Hi guys & dolls....
Looking into new CAD stations and we've been reviewing these two processors.  Wondering what your opinion is on the two.  I'm an AMD fan (as you know) but this new Intel *looks* h-o-t................comments?  Thanks kiddies!!

Based on the limited information I could find, it looks like Intel has won back the performance lead for the time being.

Counterpoint (keep in mind that Tom Yager could be referred to as an AMD "enthusiast"):

...Intel also managed to lure at least two journalists to its site to perform benchmarks on unreleased, overclocked Core 2 Duo systems, the results of which were published alongside benchmarks of AMD’s Athlon 64 FX-62 , a shipping CPU that AMD sent directly to reviewers so they could test them without vendor interference. The market still has plenty of reason to remain skeptical.

Biased though he may be, you have to wonder if there is a grain of truth to what he says about the benchmarking.  It certainly wouldn't be the first time a high tech vendor attempted to skew public opinion through the use of rigged benchmark comparisons.

Oh, it wouldn't surprise me at all.  He needs to realize that using a tone like that will make people less likely to belive him though.  If/when I listen to All Things Considered I take everything said with an enormous grain of salt due to their extremely liberal slant.  Ditto that the other direction for Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, et al the other direction.

The frothing at the mouth does tend to detract from his credibility a little, doesn't it? :-D

Here's a 2 Core 3.40GHz

Here are the results for my work machine.  It skipped the 3D tests because I don't have DirectX 9 installed, and I didn't bother with the CD tests when it asked me to insert a CD.

Here is something to compare against.

Mark,

How did it do using a full test?

I didn't run the full test, was concentrating on the CPU and drives mainly.
