Ok i have a deep question for you. We all know that the AutoLisp interpreter is compiled into the exe itself but what does the results of this test mean?!
Open a windows exporer to ".../Acad/" folder and rename the "vl.arx" to something else like "vl.arx.temp" then start acad and run a lisp expression. ...Nothing happens!? Dahell is that about?! Is the lisp language truly internal?
OBTW, close acad and rename the vl.arx back to its orig name and start acad.

Actually the lisp environment has always been included in a file outside of the EXE, once in R12, I replaced the lisp interpreter file with the R13 version and I had a couple of more lisp functions not included in R12. Back then the files were not .arx but .exp

Really?! ...wait a frickin' min!? (I think i did know that. I remeber reading something about that --I think? LoL--. Wasnt the first version that had lisp 2.6?)

Has anybody tried downloading CommonLisp? If so, have you had any luck loading or using it? I've d/l'ed it but can't figure out how to make it work.

Originally lisp was not a part of AutoCAD, but they decided to add it since lisp was the language of choice for engineers and scientists, who were EXACTLY the kinds of clients Autodesk wanted to attract.
When lisp was added I have no idea, but I can tell you that lisp has been around for many many decades, at least since the 50's

Oh i knew that.--The lisp language has been arround almost as long as fortran-- but i thought i stumbled on something. Now that i think about it some more, i realise that i just had a case of stupidity. lmao!
Daron why?

To use it outside of autocad. I just wonder if it can be useful in other apps.

Daron
I would go to C++, VB, C#, etc. Your knowledge of AutoLisp will help you when learning another language.

Indeed it does, actually once you learn any one higher level language the switching back and forth becomes almost effortless, the worst part is learning the functions.
-
I will, when I get out of my markup language mess.
-
Daron you Ninny! Do it now!

Does JavaScript and PHP count?
-
Yep

Good, then I should have my mind wrapped around it tightly. It's funny the things you learn about while reading a book on a different topic. I learned more about frames, multi-dimensional arrays and css by reading the jscript book than I had learned from other books on those subjects. Lots of good Jscript too.

I use a document management system (AutoManager Workflow) to handle all my dwg files and a few *.doc's too. The great thing is that AMW also uses lisp so I can communicate between the two pretty easily... it sure saves me a lot of calculating !

Wasnt the first version that had lisp 2.6?
First introduced in 2.1 as the "Variables and expressions feature" and in version 2.18 as AutoLISP.
This was at a time that featured LISP chips from TI, Lisp Machines from Symbolics and the space shuttle reentry system written in LISP (on Symbolics).
