Actually; I need a little more information to render a good answer....
is that TWO different profiles, in the same view or what?

Depends on how the style is defined. Try checking the "Start point anchor point" and "End point anchor point" settings. Ours are set to "Anchor Curve Start in View Dimension" instead of "Anchor Curve Start Dimension" and likewise for the end point.
EDIT: Check the Dimension component of the vertical curve label style.

thank you, that was the key "anchor curve dimension start in view"...key part was the "in view"

So in the default Civil3D template we can update that piece and it should now look normal on small crests and sags?

Also, you may want to create a child style of your typical vertical curve style that includes something like, "Length of Vertical Curve Shown," or some such verbiage, with the field of the that partial length.
