Title: Success with raster to vector
Post by: mbrandt5 on October 26, 2017, 03:04:21 PM
Has anyone had success with raster to vector conversion...
Obviously if you get a pdf you can import it into cad with layers...
But say you get a jpeg or a png file.  The program inkscape is a free program that does not necessecarily trace bitmaps the greatest for insert into cad via dxf or other formats for that matter.

Has anyone out there had success with such conversions, to the extent that walls and windows actually convert properly?

Hence with pictures of drawings a floor plan could grow out of a it.

I do some drawings for a friend who does patio awnings and additions, he never gets a CAD file to start with so most times I open the (usually scanned) image in an image editor, Inverse the colours (so you get a black background with white lines) and insert it into the drawing. I then set the transparency level so I can just see it and then trace over the lines I need, scale to the correct units and delete the inserted image.
It's not super accurate but it's enough for additions and such.

Yeah, there is always the insert and trace method.  Yeah I am interested in turning that 30 minutes to hours into seconds.

Any input I am sure will be dually appreciated.

I don't think it will be readily possible anytime soon. The data stored in a raster file is far less than that of a vector file.

Has anyone had success with raster to vector conversion...
Do you ask for a special software or for common experience? If you want to test a software take a look at www.softelec.com
