Title: Layer States
Post by: wya11 on October 12, 2016, 11:35:01 AM
Hi there,

I am brand new to the Swamp. I was directed here from a member on Reddit where I asked this question.

I've been using AutoCad for a while now and although I am pretty experienced, I have zero experience creating lisp's, which I am told may be a solution for me. At a previous job I used Vectorworks and was easily able to switch between "saved views" with two key strokes. The AutoCad equivalent is of course Layer States. I'm just wondering if someone has or could help me set up a hotkey to scroll through different Layer States at my work.

I hope this makes sense and thank you for any help!

Thanks,

W

Welcome to the Swamp.
I am using an older version of ACAD so I will not be up to speed on Layer States Manager. I currently find the Express Tools version of the layer manager more to my liking.

You can learn what has been done here "Layer States" (https://goo.gl/ZrkdKR)
Creating  Up/Down buttons for stepping through the saved layer states is doable.

In addition to all of the extremely helpful people here on TheSwamp.org (http://TheSwamp.org) (CAB is definitely one!), I gained great LISP knowledge from AfraLISP.net (http://www.afralisp.net/autolisp/tutorials/the-basics-part-1.php).  Excellent explanations & exercises that start at the most basic (Hello World!) and work up to the most advanced uses of LISP.

W,
I just ran across this Bricsys CAD tutorial that did almost what you want with a tool Bar.
https://www.bricsys.com/tv/m/?employing-the-display-power-of-layer-states-m268

You may be able to do same in ACAD.

The ACAD.PGP has a hotkey shortcut LMAN

LMAN,      *LAYERSTATE

Once in the dialog scrolling is available ...

Or did you mean to ask for something else ??

Welcome to TheSwamp.

or from the menu

So from that you could create you own button to pull up the dialog.
Not quite the same as up/down buttons but better to scroll the list IMO.

Hi Alan
The functionality is quite adequate and versatile.

The only time I program with Layer States is to setup default states in new drawings or repair states in established drawings.

The menu list populates in a usable manner.

I like what they're doing with BricsCad; they have always seemed to care about their users and developers.

Yes that looks quite adequate. Using ACAD2006 the Layer manager was not fully developed so I use Express tools version extensively.
I see in newer versions 2012+ it auto updates from ET LM to get you current. Only thing would like to see is a pulldown like the layer changer but for layer states.
I purchased BrcisCAD V16 but have not jumped into it with both feet.
My current workload is overwhelming me & no free time to get acquainted with the new software.
I have set up all my buttons & menu's and need to start testing my LISP library.

ACAD also has the ability to save layer states within the View Manager (VIEW) or on the View tab of the Ribbon. It even has its own toolbar (if anyone still uses those.)

cool, thanks for sharing! drawing needs a scale figure... I like the "micro" anchors and then realize that to scale those must be taller than my house!
