Without using "dimscale", is there another "Field" property that will let me get the scale of a drawing / view without selecting an object?

Each viewport has its own scale.

If you need a manual while-you're-CADing check just select the viewport and it will be listed on the properties box.  If you need a LISP method then try googling AutoCAD LISP viewport DXF code or something similar...
