Title: Any Map 3d users here?
Post by: yarnstormer on January 05, 2016, 01:56:31 PM
I'm mapping county waterlines etc...have traditionally done mapping in cad, but I'd like to do my work so that it can be utilized by GIS dept. GIS says my work can't be used other than to trace.

What does Map 3d do if it does not integrate with GIS? I was able to import shape files etc and it "looks" like an arcmap file. But what about the information I draw in? Is it not any more useful than exporting polylines for the GIS dept to trace over?

I'm campaigning for an all GIS approach but for now I'm asked to have cad as well.

Suggestions?

the level of usefulness is dependant upon

A) accuracy of the source data to cad conversion

is this stuff digitized, or field located (GPS or survey)

B) use of object data to embed and or link the Graphic to database(s)

No reason your MAP data can not successfully export as SDF or SHP files for your GIS department to utilize.

on second thoughts

an ideal workflow might be as follows

attach their data source (database) to map session
add to MAP

draw, add the new geometry, and then create NEW records from that geometry
add data records to the database
check in all features

everything is now in their datastore

no reson to export , or import or attempt to merge shp files.

assuming you have rights/permission to do so. :)
