Title: annotative text question
Post by: Bethrine on April 30, 2015, 11:41:18 AM
If I set my text to annotative, at 1/8" in paperspace, can I use it in both model and paperspace and it will print at 1/8" both on a paperspace layout and through a viewport that scales at say 1 : 4?

Did I make that clear?  :?

yes, to be clear you are setting PAPERSPACE Height

AND you will need to ADD the ANNO SCALE i.e. Viewport Scale that you want it to appear in to the text object(s)

It's that second part that bothers me. If I have a viewport at 1 : 4 and another at 1 : 2 then I have to somehow (ie vpfreeze) turn off the annotative text I don't want in each viewport and create another annotative text for the other, is that correct?

I want to set it to paperspace height and then wherever I put text, in either paper space or model space, have it print at that set paperspace height no matter what, even if I have viewports that scale objects in model space differently. I don't want to have to create a text for each viewport. Is that possible?

NO (technically yes - you only create one text object - it scales itself automatiically to the view IF it has that annotative scale (viewportscale actually) assigned to it.)

You ONLY assign the annotative scale to the text objects that you WANT to SEE at that scale.

So IF I create a text object and ONLY have annotative scales of 1:1 and 4:1 then I will only see it in views that are at those scales.

So I can create one text object, add a scale to it for each viewport scale, so it can be seen in all of the viewports, and it will only show the properly scaled text for each viewport and it will print at paperspace height? And it will show at paperspace scale if I put it in paperspace?

I'm going to try it. (Hopefully I don't waste too much paper.)

Basically, yes, as long as your annotative variables are set correctly. I find it useful to work through viewports when doing this type of thing.

So I can create one text object, add a scale to it for each viewport scale(that you want that particular text to appear in), so it can be seen in ONLY the viewports WITH THE SAME SCALE(S), and it will only show the properly scaled text for each viewport and it will print at paperspace height? And it will show at paperspace scale if I put it in paperspace?

correct...

don't print just measure the text in paperspace...

Am I going to have to add an annotation scale for every text object? Specifically, I want the text in my callout circles to annotate per viewport.

I've recently been working with 2D drawings and moving a part among other parts means moving some, but not all, of my leaders which works better if the leaders are in model space with the object.

Change of last question...

Is there a way to automatically add several annotation scales to text objects automagically so I don't have to click on every one?

<edit> I suppose I could try matchproperties.

Alternatively, you could set-up one and copy it.

I'm trying to make this easier and faster... :idiot2:

Oh, the text already exists in the drawing and you are trying to change the properties of it?

grab them all go to properties....add/edit annotation scales there

Some of it. I am also adding stuff (and removing stuff). I am using old drawings as "templates" for newer ones. I have to update styles in this process to current as well as modify for newer equipment and set-up.

what you are seeing is all possible variations (annoscales) and positions for those text objects...

takes some getting used to

I saw that in modelspace. That pic was through a viewport after a matchproperties. What I initially did was use design pallet to drop in the annotative callout style. Then changed the style of one of the original callouts and then matchproperties. Didn't quite work. Then I put in a new callout using the same annotation callout and matched properties to that. That worked.

Excellent progress you are making.

Okay, I'm starting to really get this but something new:

In model space, call outs are small and spaced very far from the arrowhead, looks strange and will probably confuse others if they are not familiar.
In paper space, call outs are the right size and through the view port I can adjust them so they look great. This makes them even weirder in model space.
If I adjust them in model space, they overlap in paper space.

Any input?

Place original notes in model space...

Adjust as required through Viewports...

Again, it does take some getting used to...

Imagine my situation...notes in model space

and then shown in different viewports that have had DVIEW Twist(s) applied....now when you look at notes in the modelspace...they really look out of place.
one starts to 'trust' that they are 'fine' in their respective viewports.

Time to put together a small video/screen capture to illustrate the process, and work methods to those others...amaze them with your voice over skills

:wideeyed2: You mean I have to grow as a person and do something professional and edgy?!

Ugh. I was just going to comment that I didn't think the mess in model space would fly with everyone else. (I am low man on the totem pole here.)

I was also wondering if I could clean up model space and then adjust through view ports so that both appeared clean?

Found my solution (see pic) in model space.

Thank you mj !!!!!

There is that, and then there is a function called ANNOREST - RT-Click menu Synchronize Multiple Scaled Positions

Yup, see, you did tell me..I just didn't see the model space part, I wasn't looking for it. Assumed anno scale was only in paperspace.

When teaching Basic Autocad classes - I developed a 20 minute exercise to fully
illuminate users to the power and functionality of ANNOTATIVE text, blocks, and hatch objects.

A few pieces of texts with various anno scales assigned, and a few viewports at different scales.

People come right pretty quick when they see how it works for them.

for your purposes...
imagine a block that consists of something like a screw and a washer...

IF it is set to annotative you are free to insert it into the assembly, along with a block for the center mark (if not coming from the dimensions)
either way at a certain scale the centermark shows, however not the screw and washer because they would be meaningless or clutter at that scale.
at a smaller scale the screw and washer appear in the viewport and the centermark either does or is shown smaller because it too is annotative
either through the dimension string being annotative or the centermark block being so as well....

just to consider

I was thinking I now had an additional tool. Then I read this:

and...

...though it will take some time and practice for me to implement it. Well worth the experience though!
