Title: Best way to learn C3D for free?
Post by: Bob Wahr on December 10, 2008, 03:46:36 PM
Most likely without the software to do it on.  I've got until Fall semester next year to know at least enough to teach through the basics.  Any tips are appreciated.

Have you got a school email address? If so you can get the student edition of Autodesk software for free

Yeah, I've got one of those.  I'll have to look into that.  Thanks.

Ouch.  Good luck!

If you can't get an educational license, I'd say don't even try this one.  It will be hard enough even if you DO get the software, and spend beaucoup hours working with it before your class.  Learning C3D with no official training is like pulling your own teeth.   :?

Unless of course you are good with vague and inconsistent help files and tutorials.

Yes, I have used Autodesk products before.

So you're saying it's more like pulling your own teeth after taking pain killers?   :-)

I've used Inroads/SelectCAD, Autodesk can't screw up worse than Bentley.

Can they?

Bob, are you not in Arizona?  If so; perhaps I could find some time to sit with you and go through some stuff.
Also use the tutorials on my web site as a starting point.

I am in Arizona but wouldn't feel right getting free help when selling help is how you make a living.  Will definitely check out your tutorials.

Bob, I appreciate your position.  In actuality I make my living doing training, (not support) I give away support after the training, because I know my students will not really need any.  I think I understand that you teach at a school, and by helping you I would be helping the cad community by extension.  Also, I would be helping you, knowing (assuming) that you would most likely provide some referrals to help others beyond the academic setting.

Or perhaps if the schedule works we could arrange to do a class at the school in the same fashion as the classes put on by Southeast Technical Institute. That way you could attend the class, learn what you needed, and the school could make a profit on getting you the training you need to teach the classes they want you to teach.  I am willing to bet that if the school were to advertise a class for working professionals it would fill up in under a week.  Perhaps you should contact Rodney Brietling at STI, and ask about the response on the success we have had with the classes.

Another option Bob, would be to download the trail version from the web.
Then watch some of the autodesk web casts' before hand, be selective, and only watch the topics that catch your eye.
Watch my tutorials, and then try do do 'stuff' with it for the full trail period.  You should be able to make decent headway.
Any questions that you have along the way can be posted here, and the most excellent Swampers will always throw you a rope.

Something like that. Maybe more like giving yourself a prefrontal lobotomy. :lmao:

Seriously though Mr. Wahr, if you don't have the funds for training and your employer is unwilling to pay the best way is to use all resources at hand. This would include discussion forums (like this one), tutorials (provided with the product as well as online lessons; video and text tutorials), magazine articles, etc. Aside from that just get your hands on a copy of the software and jump in with both feet!

Training is expensive. Fortunately for folks like us there are many peers who are willing to help us along when we run into walls free of charge.

Training is expensive.

Only IF gets their training from an autodesk vendor.

If one gets their company training from me, it isn't expensive because I will train EVERYONE for one set fee.
A recent client had me train over 30 employees (over 5 days) for less than it would have cost to train 5 people for three days with an autodesk vendor.

As an example, the training sessions at Southeast Tech were only $550/per student (the school set the price) for 5 days.  This is only slightly more expensive than two(2) days of 'cad camp' and far more effective, and informative.

Just to offer another alternative I signed up for EE's (the guys behind civil3d.com) CivilAccess and have been taking their stuff. It's all online which matched more in line with that my company (two moonlighting PEs and me) needed. Based on his comments here, I'm sure Michael's training is awesome, but at ~$600 for the year, I couldn't beat the EE stuff.

Buy a book, review the help, watch the tutorials on Michael's site, post here, post at Autodesk's groups. You can do it alone, it's just hard. I know Dana had a Lone Wolf's guide sometime back that i used for guidance as well. Maybe she'll post a link here, I can't find it in my quick search.

Basically, it's a grave that I dug for myself.  I've allowed myself to get pressured into teaching a fast track civil class.  I wanted to teach the civil classes, the department head wants three classes to run sequentially in one semester.  Not really thrilled by that but I've decided to give it a shot.  She was talking about the class using LDD.  I said that it seemed to me that teaching on a discontinued package was probably not best and C3D would probably be a better choice.  Now I gets to learn me some C3D.

I'm not Dana, but HERE'S (http://www.civil3d.com/2007/08/the-lone-wolfs-guide-to-learning-or-trying-civil-3d-on-your-own/) a link to it.
