Does anyone use and understand the XDATA command? What is it for? How do you extract the information? Any other information you can provide would be helpful.
(I have looked at the help file and it doesn't really help)

Xdata is a simple way of adding additional properties to an entity - extending it, if you will. It's a bit annoying to use in that it's a simple list, not an associative list, but it works.
Here's
something on Afralisp about it.
