Heck we don't even have 2004 really installed yet... well maybe we'll jsut skip it now.

Damn... 2005 already and we still haven't gotten all of the good out of 2004..... I'll probably do the webcast. ... Don't have time to do it in person.

Sheesh, we are just getting our 2002 firmly planted. I only started implementing the software just before Christmas last year. I'm sure we'll skip 2004 and possibly 2005 and wait for maybe 2006-2007

AUTODESK PLANS YEARLY AUTOCAD RELEASES
Starting with AutoCAD 2005, Autodesk will adopt a yearly release schedule
for AutoCAD and related products. The company says it based this decision
on feedback from customers and hopes to keep the products on a 12-month
engineering cycle. The obituary schedule for older versions hasn't yet
been worked out. The current Extension strategy is currently under
evaluation, but will likely vary depending on the product. Autodesk says
it has no plans to make subscription mandatory for AutoCAD.
Product marketing manager Mark Fritts says that the Sheet Set Manager and
the table functionality are the hits of the new version with beta users.
Because the Sheet Set Manager is new and complex in its options, the CAD
manager generally plays with it for a week or so, then sets users up to
perform tasks such as publishing a plot. Table functionality is much more
straightforward-it follows the table features in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Fields, likewise, are similar to those in Word. Instances of a field
automatically update to reflect the current value for the field, making
them suited to title blocks and plot stamps.
Autodesk also provided details on new features found in its AutoCAD 2005-based architectural products-Architectural Desktop and Building Systems.

And those of you familar with Uglystation and their products will also be knowledgable to that fact that they are in the same boat and having new releases every year(I think in February) for all their software(base and vertical) AutoDesk is end of March...
I would say this is reactionary on the part of AutoDesk trying stay 1 month behind Bentley to throw a wrench in the engine when it comes to DWG compatability and all that good stuff. Then it will take Bentley 11 months to get caught up to read DWG files... and a month later, AutoCad changes yet again...
I wish they would grow up and just mind their own business and do their own thing! It all trickles down to effect all the little people :o)

You see, the only thing keeping MSTA solvent is the ability to read and write DWGs, so they HAVE to mind ADESK's business.
ADESK, OTOH, has several engines driving it's upgrade system; advances in hardware, advances in OS, advances in other Windows Compatible products, user demands, user wishlists, changes in target product, etc.

Wasn't the extension program designed to take care of that? I mean, a table generator .. how much does that provide a need for an entirely new release? Ok, so 2005 might contain a bit more than a table generator but ....

That's mighty white of 'em. Sounds like they're likely changing to meet the needs of their BIG clients and not paying any attention to the little guys. Ah well...as long as someone out there gets a new Porsche every year... :roll:
...Just thinking about it again..."no plans to make subscription manditory..." It might not be manditory, but they're making it pretty damned close!
