Topic: Linear Dimensions... Initial Placement

Greetings,

I have always suffered with the placement of a linear dimension.

a horizontal line with a dimension of that horizontal line that is 6 units to the north

point2
(drag mouse in direction of desired location)
type numeric value... i.e. 6

The distance from the horizontal line to the dimension = 4.24157534

2nd time: same operation

The distance from the horizontal line to the dimension = 3.82887546

Huh?

Anyone know how to simply drag a dimension in the desired direction, type numeric value(the desired distance from the dimensioned object)(i.e. 6) and have the dimension offset 6 units in the picked direction?

Ensure polar [F10] and object tracking [F11]is on.

1) Click dimlinear button.

2) Click point 1. Click point 2.

3) Hover over the base point of the offset until the object tracking blip appears.

4) Drag in the appropriate direction. Type in the offset.

Bob. I like your solution. I could easily set the routine I use to initiate and manage the dimlinear command by setting the polar/object tracking on/off at select times so as to better deal with my polar/object tracking issues...which is only an issue when I use the dimlinear and dimaligned type commands...

I still can't help but think that the simple ability to just drag a linear dim in the direction you desire and just type the desired distance and enter. Ortho on basically. So, if anyone might know of a way to do that... that would be cool too.
