Mystery of the disapearing XREF
« on: September 01, 2015, 07:38:58 PM »
Ok.. I have a referenced drawing.. it shows up in model space, but not correctly in the viewport.  strangly enough if I select a part of it and use CHSPACE to bring it to paperspace.. PRESTO.. all the linework shows up.  OR.. if I create a new viewport it still doesn't show up.

The vieport does not have any layers frozen or not visible.

I am very  trainable....   (forgive my spelling)

XREF on layer 0?  Viewport clipping?  Everything on the XREF at the correct Z value?  Annotative scaled blocks/text/dims?  Kind of hard to tell what's wrong with the drawing from the images.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.

try {GreatPower;}
   catch (notResponsible)
      {NextTime(PlanAhead);}
   finally
      {MasterBasics;}

In all the XREFS everything was spread out in Z values.  Once I brought everything back to 0 things were consistant.. and unfortunatly nothing showed up in the viewport.   so it's some form of Z clipping.  But I used the VPCLIP command and selected the viewport, and there was no DELETE option.  And when i create any new viewport. it's also clipping at approx 2608'  If I move everything to a positive 2608' everything shows up in the viewport.

Is this part of your binding exercise ?

altimately all references need to be bound.  at this stage, I have about 8 xrefs.  I can bind them and put them all at the 0 elevation, but then nothing will show up in the viewport.

Ok.. so I copied and pasted everything from paperspace.. minus viewport.. to a new drawing and did the same in model space.

I made a new viewport....

Everything works like it's supposed to.

FWIW .. I've had to do this in the past and rarely do the bound copies come out exactly like the referenced drawings & it's a huge PITA. I usually send both bound & referenced and hope someone with decent CAD skills can "decipher" the referenced files :). The bound files are merely a pacifier LOL.

I've had to do this on a regular basis for a long time now. It usually goes smoothly. When it doesn't and a quick look doesn't reveal anything on the surface, rather than waste time trying to track it down, I'll rebuild the files like DIW did. Granted most of the time these are files that I've created and managed through the course of the project. I absolutely hate having to do it to files that I've never touched. You never know what kind of strangeness is in them.
