Check out this description!!
Beginning at the center 1/4 corner of Section 11, Township 27 South, Range 20 East, Hillsborough County, Florida for Point of Beginning: run thence North 89°35'50" West along the East-West 1/4 line of said Section 11, a distance of 881.79 feet; thence run South 53°37'51" East 824.52 feet to a point 50 feet from the centerline of a 20 foot pavement for Morris Bridge Road; run thence North 36°22'09" East, 50 feet from and parallel to the said centerline a distance of 368.15 feet, run thence North 00°08'12" West along the North-South 1/4 line of said Section 11, a distance of 186.29 feet to the POB.
Question. Where exactly is the "center 1/4 corner" ? :)
-
The center of the section ie: ne cor of the sw 1/4, nw cor of the se 1/4, sw cor of the ne 1/4 or se cor of the nw 1/4.
-
That's what they meant but there is no such thing as a "center 1/4 corner".
Guarantee ya that wasn't a surveyor that wrote that description.
-
Office jockey no doubt
-
It must have been a Missouri surveyor, we get that call all of the time along with east, west, north and south 1/4 corners. Sometimes they will call it out the center of section which is a bit better terminology.
-
Well I was just shown, in a survey book the term "center 1/4 corner". I'll shutup now!! Apparently it's a very old term. First for me though. :)
-
Office jockey no doubt
Usally it's an attorney. I'm an office jockey, I and can do better than that. :)
-
"to a point 50 feet from the centerline of a 20 foot pavement for Morris Bridge....." Well, that sounds like it's really tied down!
"for Point of Beginning"??
Bo

 And that's not my typo either!!
Let's hope they don't move the pavement!!
-
At least it is not to the center of a creek channel or to a hash mark on the north side of a 36" Live Oak tree. Some of the old descriptions from the old Spanish land grants can get quite hairy to work from.
-
Did you know that there is really no such thing as a "Township". That's not what the "T" stands for. "Township" is a lawyer thing.
-
Well how come when you read the original notes they call it a "Township" line?
-
For example . . .

-
Because this guy had hung around lawyers too much. The "T" stands fot "Tier". That's the way they are represented on the GLO plats, eventhough they may refer to then as "townships" in the notes. It was a common term even then. Kinda like Major and Minor contours. No such thing, but that's what some call them.
Plus note that your page is from 1882. This is a resurvey or a retracement. The original GLO's are early 1860ish. Somewhere in between it got corrupted. Many of the Missippi GLO's show Section 22, T 2 East, Range 5 North". And florida was laid out way before Mississippi.
Check the BLM Manual that I recently posted. It refers to the Tiers.

I don't think I would argue the point Mark. Dent has either got a new kidney stone that has him cranky or he finally passed something like a small porcupine and has now become frisky. I think the latter though, welcome back Dent. Besides that, I think I remember hearing something about that once and it does sound logical.
-
got a clown surveyor in our office that wants us to start labeling stuff "right".
Looked it up in Black's Legal Dictionary, BLM Manual ang my trusty Syrvey text book from college. The Bum is right, but his plan won't get passed the attorneys.
-
If he has the stamp, let him have the descriptions any way he wants them. If they don't fly you get paid twice. I've about let go of taking that kind of stuff personal and save it up for when I know I'm right and am forced to put out work I know is wrong.
-
I just hate doing anything twice, especially the second time is so unnecessary.
-
Oh, GAWD! Help me please . . . I see my own words coming from Dent's keyboard
-
DADDY??????
-
Haven't looked it (Tier) up yet Dent but check this out.

trying hard -not- to eat crow twice in the same thread

DADDY??????
I may be a certified (or would that be certifiable?) GEEZER, but I'm not quite that old yet . . . However I once heard rumors of a long lost uncle supposedly left in the St. Joseph, Missouri State Asylum sometime during the 40's . . .

Regarding the great "Tier vs Township" debate . . .
According to our R.L.S., a TIER is a correction line similar to one of the Principal Meridians only running East-West. This is what we called a BASELINE in Colorado, but that is obviously a more modern terminology.
Is he right? I don't know, but consider this - he brought the field crew in today because they found ticks on their clothes . . .
-
I was told that a township is a 6 mile square area. That terminology alone gets messed up in the Northeast, where they call any small town of any size, a township.

A township is a 6 mile square (not exactly 6 miles but that's another story) when referring to the PLSS.

You have a confusing job.
-
I think around Boulder, Colorado where a baseline and a principal meridian intersect, there are a few townships less than a mile wide. Some of the sections in that area look more like kites than squares.
-
You have a confusing job.
:)
This isn't a -real- hard one but you get the idea.
A lot BEGINNING 172 1/2 feet South and 15 feet
East of the Northwest corner of the East One-half
(E 1/2) of the Southwest Quarter (SW 1/4) of the
Northwest Quarter (NW 1/4) of Section 2, Township
29 South, Range 18 East, run thence South 472 1/2
feet; thence run East 630 feet; thence run North
472 1/2 feet; thence run West 630 feet to POINT OF
BEGINNING.
-
Then there's the fun of units like varas, poles rods, chains etc. one deed that I had to plot up began at "the tree where John killed the Bear" and ran through the point "Where John is buried".
-
And for the guys who like crunching numbers:
All that part of the Northeast Quarter of the Southwest Quarter of Section . . . described as follows:
The East 66 feet of the North 20 acres of said Quarter lying South of the established Right-Of-Way for Clay County Highway "CC" . . . EXCEPT that part in roads.
