Title: Searching Blockmanager (Cadwerx is closed ..)
Post by: Peter on April 20, 2010, 11:38:49 AM
I regret very much that Byron Blattel closed his site www.cadwerx.net  :-o and hope that he will continue, but if he will not - is there another product, powerful like Blockwerx? (And DocBar too ...)

Regards

Peter

Ouch!
We've used Blockwerx for several years.  I know Hendie has as well.  I had plans to move towards using Design Centre even though I'm not a huge fan of it.  I wanted to try to use an out of the box solution to this, so all of our users would be using the same methods and software.
Well, I hope Byron is onto bigger and better things, anyway!

AFAIK... Byron B. just came up with new applications (that were even for Revit)... maybe it is just the site being down.

I see... I was able to get in and got this:
Quote
Dear CADwerx Customers,

After over 12 years of serving the CAD community, CADwerx is no longer able to meet its financial obligations due to a
lack of sales and consulting income.

The primary consequence of this situation is that our ADN subscription with Autodesk has expired and we no longer have
Autodesk products available for development or testing. Secondarily our merchant account has been closed so we cannot
process credit card transactions.

Personally, I have taken a full time job and cannot commit the time needed to satisfy customer needs and do not have the
personal financial resources to keep CADwerx afloat.

I have therefore decided to suspend all software development, distribution, and sales until further notice.

Regrettably,

Byron Blattel

We have been using one from Dotsoft. It used to be stand-alone, but is now bundled in the "ToolPac" suite of programs.  At $245.00 it's still a good block library program. Actually works much like Blockwerx..............

I tried it yesterday - a fine tool, but regrettably no comparison with BlockWerx.

Thanks. If necessary I will try it.

What exactly do you need in a block manager?

What exactly do you need in a block manager?
Shortversion:
Nearly all feature that BlockWerx have to handle 2000 blocks in 50 folders for 30 users ...

Long version:
at least ...

I do not recall any names, but there must be some non free ones out there, that might have the same functionality.

Have you tried using AutoCAD's Design Centre?  It is somewhat similar to Blockwerx.  You don't get the same options with it and (I think) it's more confusing / busy than it needs to be, but it works.

at least ...
  • Good browsing features
  • personal settings
  • insert parameters
  • multi tab for different block-groups
  • update and synchronize features
  • working with slides and thumbnails
  • handle with the block as file - open
  • multiple block selection

I've been in the process of creating one <HERE> (http://www.theswamp.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=j093uohh4ahi14fombakjp7d63&topic=32391.0) so I am looking for some criteria.

It is still early in the development but it is starting to shape up really nice.  I've added a couple of feature since this post and once I get a few more thing finalized I'll post what I have.  I am currently working on a speed issue as well a multiple open drawings.

Yeah - the pictures look fine. Keep on coding ...

http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/snap/

interesting utility from autodesk labs

looks to be a cool upgrade of design center

be careful when adding folders though - i added a folder sized 200mb or more with hundreds of drawings, the connect service (which indexes the drawings has been running at 40% cpu ever since)

if you prefer the index to be located somewhere other than your root drive, you need to edit the exe.config file in the install folder

it indexes everything - blocks, linetypes , layouts

sorry -  bummer - only runs on 2010/2011

Just wondering, did they leave everyone High-n-Dry, or did they give the source to their paying customers ?

If by 'they', you mean Byron (Cadwerx) then, no... This is the only notice I received that he pulled the plug.  Our account is in my name, too.
