I agree.
block name = 72-7438
source file = 72-7438.dwg
You should be able to open the source file and edit that attribute.
If you are in a drawing and insert 72-7438 into it, you should not be able to edit any 'constants'.

If you need to change dozens of blocks I'm pretty sure that can be scripted to do it all 'automatically'.

but why can't I edit it in 2008?   it makes no sense to me....

If you mean you can't open the source file and edit that attribute, then I don't know.  That is definitely weird.  When you open it, is there anything in the command window that might hint towards it?  (Hit F2)

So, again... are you trying to edit it after you INSERT it into your drawing or are you trying to edit the blocks source file?

I'm having the same problem in '08 with your drawing.  I can see the ' value ' property of all the attributes, but I can't change them in the property tool pallet.  Not sure why yet.  But I could change it with code, but that still doesn't seem right.

after I emailed my dwg to my trainer, she was able to, so now I think it is a setting or something....but have to wait a bit to search...

You can use the command ' ddedit ' to edit it though.

I noticed it was a 2004 file... does it need to be?  Could it be updated to 2007?

I think I'm out of suggestions.  I don't get that problem.  I'm able to edit it in 2009.

Looks like you need to install Service Pack 1 according to this.

they will eventually be upgraded, but at this point I am still working out my own 2008 bugs and still use 2005, but when we make the final change....I will

can that be done w/ a routine...I have never tried something like that.  I have (not all current...and wouldn't need to be updated) over 7000 blocks...so one by one would be a task.....

If you mean updating the file format, then yes it definitely can be automated.  Quite easily.

If you mean updating the attributes in each, I'm pretty sure that could be automated as well.

I used to have DWG TrueConvert from Autodesk and that took the place of scripts I used to write for this task.  It was really nice because you could drag all of your files into the window and it would a) show you what version they were at and B) convert all of them to whatever version of AutoCAD you wanted (R14 and later).
TrueConvert was replaced by TrueView, but I haven't tried it out since...
