Here is the version that worked:

Please let me know what you see different - I don't know what else to look at...

Odd, the first time I opened the "problem" drawing I would've sworn that I selected one of the contours and it listed as a polyline. Every time since then, though, I get Aecc_Contours listed. Here is a screen shot showing both drawings open....they look the same to me.

what is the indexctl variable set at in them?

and from your picture they look like they may have different styles (layers, and or linetypes) applied to them

Well, there you have it, Michael. It won't solve Carey's dilemma, but it explains why I selected a pline before. The White contour in the left picture IS a pline and is on a different layer, there is one other pline in another section of the drawing, all other contours shown are Aecc_Contours.  In the right pic that same contour is an Aecc_Contour.

Added: INDEXCTL in both drawings is 0

I should have mentioned - the plines are left over from an older version. The AECC_Contours are the new grading...

Were you able to see the contour objects when xrefed into a new dwg?

Yes, here is a screen shot of a drawing which Xrefs both drawings you posted. Even after closing down then reopening the drawing, the contours display fine.

Weird - it seems entirely random then...
Thanks for testing.
