Copying Viewports
« on: April 17, 2007, 10:54:28 AM »
Wow I can beleive after 14 years of using AutoCAD I'm just now finally asking this question :?...

Is there a way to copy a viewport or viewports from one layout tab to another inside the same drawing or out to a different drawing and get it to actually copy as a viewport, layers on-off, plot hidden, scale, position, etc, etc?

Try it! :-)

You might be surprised. *Hint* ctrl+c

I did this quite a few times when we were using LT98, by copying it to the Windows clipboard then into the new dwg.

Since we have switched to LT2005, it no longer works.

Works without a hitch... but there's a catch... remember to select the vports and make sure "Show viewport objects" is checked.

ctrl+c does not do it for me.  The viewport copies but when I past it it just comes in as a  rectangle (or whatever shape is drawn).

Where is the check box for "show viewport objects"?

That's exactly what happens to me.

It would be great if it was just a 'settings' issue.

I select the viewport, and access it via the right click menu... it's also in the properties of the viewport.

OK so I've partially got it.  But when I paste the VP into my new layout or different drawing I have to go into the properties and toggle the "ON" to yes.  It defaults to NO on a paste.  Is there a way to set the default to YES?

If you can find a way, I'd be extremely grateful!!  It took me long enough to figure out the trick I just told you, lol!  But yea... for now, I am just used to ctrl+v, select, rclick, hover on 'display vport objects', and checking "yes"

From one layout to another, in the same file it works.
But to a new drawing....?
No, unless you copy MS object WITH the viewport.
(unless I'm missing something TOTALLY COOL.)

No, to see what's in model space.. you'd have to have that stuff in model space.  I have often ctrl+shift+c copied objects from one drawing's model space using the origin as the reference point, and then pasted those objects into another drawing at 0,0,0 and then copied viewports.  Since viewports look at a  specific area of model space based on the coordinates, it works like a charm.
