Typically I like the ones that I can knock in a day but those are vary rare for me. :-)

1-2 months seems to be enough to get ambitious and passionate about and really see it through to success and satisfaction without getting terribly burnt out on. Of course, that's off and on... I've never had a project I've worked on all at once, start to finish.

I like most engineering jobs; because they have finite points of completeness.
And there is most always a firm Done by Date.
Its some of the Art projects I get into that, sometime seem to last forever.
Sometimes done, or finished are almost impossible.

I prefer the ones that can be done faster, not those that last or seems to last forever (I still helping on a project like this :-()

Typically, being in the civil field, we take about 2-4 weeks to do a job. Add to that all the interruptions you get, and a job may take 8 weeks. But in the meantime you probably knock out 4 really quick jobs.

Assuming you mean work related (well, yeah Deeg...) I prefer the 1-2 hour jobs that I can knock out. The cookie cutter one's that make money. But those are rare.

most of mine are 1 year+ ....It means there are few hard-core-have-to-work-late deadlines...and it's job security...

A project here, from receiving the submittal specs to issuing as-builts, can take from 2 months to 6 months. This includes initial design, submittal approval, creation of shop drawings, to final as-built drawings. Naturally, there's a lull in there during construction, but even then, we often get called in for review and clarification. Total drafting/design time is usually around 2 weeks to 2 months, spread over the duration of the project, and depending on the size and scope of the project. We often have anywhere from 3 to 6 projects running at any given time. Anyone interested in moving to Missouri and lending a hand?

if they can match $45 an hour - I'm all ears.... :) - but wait I want to quit all about drafting, architorture, design, etc, traffic engineering, civil, topo, and spent my last 10-15 years writing code.... :-P

I can't say that I've ever been involved with a serious job that hasn't lasted at least a month long. Even small additions tend to draw themselves out over a month in length. I've done a few side jobs that are about a day's work, but they shouldn't really count.
I guess my favorite job would be one that lasts between 6 months and 1 year. Any shorter than that is rushed, and any longer than that indicates a nervous nelly client who can't make his or her mind up.

Most of mine have a field component and some banter with a design team, so I'm happy if I can knock one out in less than a week. Typically they drag on with interuptions and waiting on other folks... :(

I don't mind the Big jobs - IF I can stay on them..
I HATE them when I have to jump to other smaller jobs then go back to the big one. - Unfortunately, this is the way it usually goes for me.

I know where your coming from here......Engineers seem to be in a world of their own..."this job is critical...must be out by Friday" ... then in the next breath "I want you to look at this stormwater analysis for me...run a Q100 on it for me". And people wonder why I get so cranky with them?

Or better yet, you DO rush to get it to them and they let it sit on their desk for a week. - (That is what is going on now with one engineer here.)

We have been slow but steady for some time, so today we have a client come in .. been sitting on their plans now for nearly 18 months. They want a new floor plan, and they want it by Tuesday ... good luck goober...

And then there's the other one...the Boss comes up and says "I know you're very busy, because that job is urgent....but I'd like you to input this survey as fast as you can and get a plot out so I can start working on it".
That's when I go "twiddle dee....twiddle dum".

after 36 years in the same profession, the last ones are just not good as they used to be (maybe), and it becomes like a torture (or always has be), that's why I end up combining the two words in one and I am sure, many others have the same felling too :)
Keith, I'm learning every day, my accent it is not bad at all... well if I don't say it, who will :-P
