NESTED COPY - XREFS
« on: May 14, 2014, 10:59:22 AM »
I use ncopy a lot. But I had a question if it was possible for it to do this. Usually ncopy I can select an xref line and it extracts the line to the current drawing Im in.

But Can it copy an xref into the current drawing? (so I would have a copy of the same xref twice)?

This is based on a title block notes.

Idea is we put xrefs in our titleblock and if we need to move them on the sheet files we can copy it and move it opposed to always keeping it in the same place.

Just an idea.

Thanks!

You can copy an xref using the COPY command.  Or are you trying to copy in all of the lines from the xref?  If so, simply open the xref, copy to clipboard and paste into your drawing.

I have notes that are there own drawings (dwgs). I have them attached to a Title Block (dwg). The titleblock is xref'd attached to a sheet file. I am wanting a way to copy the xref out of the title block drawing into the sheet file dwg so I can move it, if I need to.

hope that make sense.

Usually when we setup drawings we have a generic template. So this option would allow us to move a note within the sheet file without having to go manauly xref it.

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding you. But isn't that exactly what the "-XREF" command with the "BIND" option does?

No you are fine. Ultimately, I would like the notes.dwg to be the main drawing (just for notes). If I bind those notes into the sheet from the xref I loose the xref connection. I think the bind would cause it to be a block. So If I update the main notes dwg those changes will not get carried thru.

I have a sheet file. It has the following attached:
-xref1.dwg
-xref2.dwg
-notes.dwg
-titleblock.dwg

The Notes are actually (attached in the titleblock.dwg). So the user can not move the notes xref from the sheet file.

I want the user to beable to click on the notes and then it becomes native to the current sheet drawing. (user can move it now). And he can turn off or freeze the layer of the xref notes within the title block thru layer manager.

suggest you inert those notes as a separate XREF

I'm seeing this as a case of 'the problem is the solution'

And there is no reason that they couldnt turn off those Notes_XREF.dwg
or simply UNLOAD the Xref instead of freezing.

However to get the layer control, just make sure that when the notes xref is attached that you give it it's oven layer.

I think you're making this a bigger issue than it needs to be.  Open the title block, then open the notes xref.  Copy/paste into your working drawing and *PRESTO!*  You're done.

True... But we want to only edit the notes from one source drawing... So it can be updated throughout the set.

Separate xref(s).  Done.

I think that's the answer.

Off the wall question with this... the more xref's you have a sheet drawing; the longer it takes to regen and plot?

Of course, because there's more "stuff" to regen but if it's just text you shouldn't notice much of a difference in load/regen/plot times.  It doesn't sound like there will be a lot of text anyways.
