Lost .lin
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:28:08 AM »
Need a crash course in lin files. Sorry if this may be confusing, but I'm giving it my best shot with what info I have.

We have a boat load of files, that I think were created with a MS seed file that had only 2 linetypes (continuous and dashed).
I'm sure lin files are loaded through options support paths (Acad),  but opening and loading lts in each file is not option because there are so many files and I think that's why I'm being asked

Is there a simple, time effective way (batch/script/lisp), possibly too many to open each dwg, and attach acad.lin?

Thx's

I'm not quite sure what you are asking.
Linetype definitions for a particular drawing are stored in that drawing.

You can load linetype definitions from a file, but the file can be stored anywhere, it doesn't have to be in the support file search path.

Are you wanting to load all the linetypes in "acad.lin" into many drawings?

Nor am I being on the bottom of the food chain  :-D
acad.lin would be loaded on opening, so I believe they want the lt's loaded w/o opening each file

Yes exactly, prefer externally because there are so many files
From what I gather the files where created with MS and only have 2 linetypes, (continuous and dashed)

Sorry for my wording +Thx's

"acad.lin" is not "loaded" when a drawing is opened.
A [.lin] file is simply an ASCII container for linetype definitions, it's only used when a user points to it when loading a linetype.

One way would be to create a new empty drawing and load the desired linetypes in it.
Then use a script to insert this drawing into all of your other drawings.
Of course, you could just script the loading of the linetypes from the [.lin] file also.

perhaps even a simple drag and drop through the toolspace (I think a Rt-Click will allow all ltypes selected to be loaded in one operation)?

If the Lin file only contain continuous and dashed then they are duplicates of each other and
ACAD.lin, so just delete them. If they are variations of those types then how can you tell them apart
if they have the same line type name?
