What is the scenario?
1) A fresh install
2) A new Drawing
3) An old Drawing
4) Another companies files?
5) Does AutoCad start up?

If you can open it; audit, purge, audit, purge. Do other house cleaning on the drawing.
If you can't open it; try recover.
If it opens after a recover, attempt item 1.
If a recover fails; open a new drawing and insert it into the new drawing.
You might also try the last item after any of the other items are complete, just to leave out any of the garbage that gets left behind, like defpoints and such. Only, don't insert, but copybase using a selection, not "ALL" and pasting it into the new drawing.

P.S. If none of the above works, you may have a useless drawing.

Also try inserting it into an empty drawing.

if it starts to open but then crashes.
Try and hit the "esc" key once it opens. This will stop more things to load.
It could be a bad reference file or something like that.
It's not necessarily the drawing but rather something attached.

You can sometimes cancel things and get it to open.
If you are sucessful at this, try what daron posted.

So this morning I open this drawing I've been working with the past couple of days and start doing a little work. I click the button to open the Layer Control dialog and get myself a nice fat fatal error.

I open MAP again and open the drawing. Previously, I had entities selected when I clicked the layer button so, this time, I click the button only.

Fatal error.

Okay, I open MAP again and run a recover on the drawing... no errors found.

I audit the drawing... no errors found.

I purge the drawing completely and save.

I close the drawing, open it up again, and do nothing but click the layer button.

Fatal Error.

That Map 3D 2006 stuff is great.

Pardon my while I reboot.  :x

What happens if you try to DXF out the drawing and then import that dxf

You should get some of the drawing back

Don't know anything about Map, but one thing I have too remind myself is to audit all the attachments.

Any Xrefs/images?

:)

This was with Map, fresh from the start, right after reboot, with no drawing opened at all.

I put in a request with IT already "can I please be trusted with the installation CD's so that I may attempt to reinstall Map?

Man, that whole thing was a lot easier when I was the ITwit.

There was an 05 service pack that fixed up some layer dialog problems, but we never installed 2006.  There were 2 service packs I think, are they installed?

Did the layer dialog ever work then?  Perhaps a repair . . . that is pretty painless with 06 products.

Yep, the layer dialog worked fine yesterday. As soon as I get the CD's from IT I plan on doing a repair.

Drat!  :x

I thought I found a solution here.

Nope. I got .NET 2.0 installed first thing Tuesday morning.

BTW: Got that info from here.

Is there a way to disable all the Map *stuff* and run just plain vanila AutoCAD?

I hink you can edit the shortcut to run vanilla by removing everything after "adac.exe" in the target box

Nope:

Code: [Select]
"C:\Program Files\Autodesk Map 3D 2006\acad.exe"
The only thing different in mine is I have /nologo after the command...

Hey! Maybe there's a /nobloat switch too!

I don't have stand alone MAP here, does your target point to an arg file or the exe file?

Sorry, bad eye alergies today and I didn't see all of it.  Do you have an arg file somewhere that is loading with MAP?

If not, the only way I can think of is to unload all of the MAP menus in the cui  :-P :-P :-P :-P

It may not be too painful . . . save your current workspace first, make a copy of it and slash away at the copy and then save it.

From adesk:  There is no way to not load map and get plain acad.  I wrote a unload function and put in s::startup

I had forgoten all about this mess.  Mapskinmap was a VERY bad idea that someone came up with for 2006 . . . they didn't even try to fix it in 2007 and just disabled it.
