Help with custom linetype...
« on: March 27, 2007, 09:59:01 AM »
What is the trick to making a custom linetype?

I used the command in the express tools but when it is complete it only draws a continuous line.  What I am after is a fence linetype that has a 5' cont line with a 4" "X" at each end and I want it to repeat so the "X"s are 5' apart.  I would like to have it set up with an "X" on either end regardless of how long it is.

Here is what we use
Quote
*TEP-FENCE,Fenceline circle ----X-----X----X-----X----X-----X--
A,.5,-.2,["X",TEP,S=.1,R=0.0,X=-0.1,Y=-.05],-.125
Everyone has a photographic memory, Some just don't have film.
They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy Bacon and that's a close second.
Sometimes the question is more important than the answer. (Thanks Kerry for reminding me)

So I think you would rearrange this to give you the look you want.  TEP btw is a font style for the 'X'

You want to make sure the font you want is defined before you try to use the linetype, else it errors out

Is there a way to use 2 lines to make an X instead of a font?

What does all of this mean in case I want to tweak it a little?

the 'A' starts it off, the .5 is a 1/2unit line, the -.2 is a space, then the 'X' is a font, using TEP style, size .1, rotation 0, X&Y coordinates, and -.125 is space after letter

will,
I think you need to create a "shape" to do what you want to do (its been a long time since I created one)
Thanks for explaining the word "many" to me, it means a lot.

Ok, so I made a shape.  Where would it go in to this scheme?

Ok, so I made a shape.  Where would it go in to this scheme?

Here's a linetype I made to represent "R" Panel sheeting:

*SHEETING,SHEETING  ___/--\___/--\___
A,.00028,[SHEETING,S:\Drafting\Linetypes\SHEETING.SHX,s=1],-28

Here's the shape file text:

*1,62,SHEETING
4,119,4,84,3,119,3,3,3,128,002,9,(0,0),001,9,(18,0),(14,14),(18,0),(14,-14),(18,0),(5,5),(9,0),(5,-5),(9,0),(4,5),(9,0)
(5,-5),(0,0),002,9,(-127,0),(-1,0),(0,0),001,4,128,4,3,4,119,3,84,3,119,0

Now remember, a shape file is a .shp... you need to callout a .shx file though, which is a compiled shape file.

Shape file text:

AutoCAD-86 shapes 1.0
    G SHEETING wTw                                wTw EOF

...yea gibberish... anyways... help file will tell you about SHX files from SHP I believe... I am not being rude, I just can't remember how, off the top of my head

Do you have the books that you can get from www.autodeskbookrequest.com ?  I learned all this from the "Customization Guide" book.  It may also be in electronic format already on your installation directory which might be accessible via the help dialogue.

i think you just type compile, and feed it the shp file

Will
Sorry for the delay.
Just in case you havent got this sorted this is part of one of my .lin files
Code: [Select]
;;
;;  These linetype definitions use LINES.SHX.
;;
*DIVERSION1,Diversion Route Triangle Sign --^---^---^---^---^---^---^---^--
A,.25,-.1,[TRIA,lines.shx,x=-.1,s=.1],-.1,1
*DIVERSION2,Diversion Route Diamond Sign --<>---<>---<>---<>---<>---<>---<>--
A,.25,-.1,[DIA,lines.shx,x=-.1,s=.1],-.1,1

You will need to create a shp file with the shape(s) you want to use.
Code: [Select]
*100,5,TRIA
013,02d,028,013,0

*101,5,DIA
022,026,02a,02e,0

The shape file will need to be compiled and these can then be used in the linetype.
Code: [Select]
*DIVERSION2,Diversion Route Diamond Sign --<>---<>---<>---<>---<>---<>---<>--
A,.25,-.1,[[color=red]DIA,lines.shx,x=-.1,s=.1[/color]],-.1,1
The top line is more of a descriptor (some of which shows in the pulldown menu when the line is loaded.
The bottom line in red is how you call it. The "DIA" is the shape you want to show, and the "lines.shx" is the file that the shape definition is stored in. (The shx file needs to be stored in a path that acad looks at or it wont work :-))

If you want anymore help, please shout.

Here's a linetype I made to represent "R" Panel sheeting:
Not to hijack the tread but

Josh:

Are you not using ADT?
You can create different sheeting shapes with the Detail Component Manager.  When I need to create a section thru metal siding, I create & modify a component from metal decking components.

Okay end of hijack and I will go away now.
I + XI = X is true ...  ... if you change your perspective.

I no longer CAD or Model, I just hang out here picking up the empties beer cans

Nope... plain 'ol vanilla.  I'm happy enough with it.  Then again I have never been 'fully versed' in any addons.  Though I think if we ever get another package, I'd be more inclined to get something from the Revit series... either Revit Building (we do a lot of design/build projects) or Revit Structure.. or some seats of both.
