Is there a way to get the datalink connection to open rather than through opening autocad land desk and then opening a project...

Short of buying the TDS stand alone package, No.
The trick is to make the software you purchased work as advertised. If it's not working right, call the idiot that sold it to you. It's his job to help you fix it.
