Can't select Entities with Non-zero elevation
« on: July 14, 2008, 01:34:05 PM »
I have a civil drawing (site plan with contours both existing and proposed) and Autocad will not allow me to select any of the object with a non-zero elevation (z-value).

If I draw a line or polyline with a zero elevation, I can select it as usual for move, copy, list, etc.  But if I change the elevation, I can still see it, but can't select it.

Any else ever had this problem?  Anyone ever had it and been able to fix it?  :)

I have opened the file in BricsCad and can select all objects as selected, but when I save the drawing and re-open it in Autocad, I get the same, no-select, problems.

Thanks,
David

Don't know the answer but what version of ACAD are you using?

I have seen the problem in  2004 and 2007 vanilla and C3D2009 as autocad

I assume you have ruled out the obvious, unselectable groups & locked layers.
An audit or regen doesn't fix it?

Can you post a sample DWG?

Yep, all the obvious causes have been checked and ruled out.

I can, however, select the entities using SSX, but not with on-screen selection.

The problem file is attached

EDIT:  THe attached file is a portion of the original.  I used SSX to select some of the problem entities, dxf'ed them into a new file and still had the problem.  So I attached that new file since it is smaller.  The DXF process changed the lwpolylines to old style polylines, but the problem is still there.  Too weird

When I do a REGEN the contour line disappear. I suspect that they do not really exist.
Not an answer, but there is no object there. Just some leftover screen debris.

They do disappear after a regen but reappear after zoom extents for me. I am able to select them with a select all (Ctrl+a) but cannot deselect them with a crossing window. In fact there are a number of text objects, blocks and arcs that cannot be deselected. If I copy and paste them into another file, I can select them.

Those are exactly the results that I get (regen - appear-disappear).

But they do exist.  I used SSX to select everything then used a LISP routine to change the elevations to 0 and the contours are selectable.

Strange results indeed

Issuing the DVIEW command seemed to reset the ploylines to selectable.
Don't ask me how. 8-)

Worked for me too.   Thanks for finding that little trick.  Did you have some reason for trying DVIEW?

No reason, just thought the ucs may be the culprit & my ucs buttons have dview in them.
When the button worked I broke out each command.

I have read about the dview before but keep forgetting it.
Command: 3 3DORBITCTR Specify orbit center point:
** Orbit commands cannot be used at this scale **
This was an odd warning I got before using the dview and with a zoomextents on a frontview the drawing becomes a dot.
